Nice Sightings At GSO Tonight

I was out riding my bike in the woods and saw saw neat planes go over, so I road out to the airport to see what was going on. I got out there in time to see these:

United 777 landing (to timco)
Umarked, completely white 757
USAF MD-11 I think
FedEx 727
Delta 727
Alitalia 727 land
Tradewinds A300 land

And looked at Timco to see
1 Eastwind 737-200
2 Alitalia 727s parked
1 Alitalia 757?
2 white 757s

USAF MD-11? More likely KC-10, as the USAF do not have MD-11s

About a month ago I was driving on I-40 which is in the flight path from Greensboro's main runway. On approach was a United 767-300. What is United having done with their 767's there? I was stuck in traffic (naturally) and about 5 minutes later I saw the 767 on downwind again, turn onto final and go back to GSO. There are a lot of wierd sightings there at GSO from time to time.

Didn't Eastwind "go under" a couple of years ago? If you saw their plane, then I am obviously wrong.

Its been years since I've lived in GSO, visited a few times since though. Quite nice to see all those birds, I loved seeing the Air Gabon and Transbrasil 767s there a while back, both parked on the same ramp with other 767s, A300s, and a United DC-10. Last time I was in GSO there were 6 L1011s on the field. Sometimes I wish I hadn't have moved...

We are talking about GSO = Greensboro right? I don't think Alitalia, Air Gabon, or Transbrasil ever served that airport

One word for you... DUH! We know that. The airlines are probably having some work done on their aircraft.. I think if GSO got Air Gabon and Trans-Brasil on a scheduled basis, Flint would be a good choice for Air France and maybe Green Bay would be a good choice for Qantas? Watcha think?

It sure looked like an MD-11, but if the KC-10 is similar that must be it. As I was on my bike I was booking it to get in sight of the field.

Right now sitting at GSO is:
2 United 767-300
2 Alitalia 727
1 Eastwind 737-200 (been sitting there since Eastwing went under, this plane was damaged last year during a microburst that hit the area)
Alitalia 707 (I think, was hard to tell)
2 Airborne Express 707s
What looked like some sort of Air Egypt
4 ICG L10-11s (in storage)
1 Tradewinds L10-11
2 Tradewinds A300s
1 TWA L10-11 (at Tradewinds)
1 FedEx 727 (at Cargo Facility)
3 other Fedex planes I couldn't see that were blocked by the 727 in my line of sight.


All the interesting planes are at Timco for maintanence of course. But it sure is cool to catch one land. I work right off one of the runways on Friendly Ave, was coming out the other day and saw a Southeast Airlines take off (gambling charter I am sure).

As for United. They bring most of the 767s in from the west coast and they seem to sell seats on them and try to connect them out of Greensboro. But I see one 767 or 777 per week there.

There are a few others planes parked there that I could not make out.

Anyone know what they are building at Timco beside the old US Air Maintanence facility? And Anyone know what they are building next to the cargo hub? Surely they are not starting on the FedEx building yet....

Photo spots... hmm. Its tough out there. If they are using 5/23 and approaching from the North, then there is a GREAT spot to grab pictures when they land. Its at the end of a road where the new FedEx hub will be. (68->Bryan Blvd->Oak Ridge Rd exit, og straight across Oak Ridge Rd and you cannot miss it)


If they are landing on 5/23 and approaching from the south, you are really out of luck.... I have found nothing suitable. Though, you can get some good ground shots of them lining up for takeoff near market street.

If they are using 14-32 from either direction its tough. No good spots.

I am trying to compile a list of "scheduled" airline and cargo flights in and out, but I am having trouble finding anything. You can definately catch sites of a good tradewinds widebody from about 1pm to 3pm every day. And there are always neat planes sitting at Timco (as noted above).

From what I can tell, United usually brings the large planes in on Sunday night, and Airborne Usually pulls 707s out on Sunday morning. But that is my experience. I''ll see what the frequency of Southeast/Ryan Air Charters are.

Tradewinds is supposed to be bringing in their new Passenger fleet sometime soon.

Airborne = DC-8's not 707's.
I don't think Alitalia had 707's, but had 727's in the 70's and mid 80's, could it be ryan international (emery 727 colors)?

Other than that, I believe you. I used to go to GSO every summer to visit a friend, and they did have some cool things parked (I was amazed about the L1011's being there when I first went).

OK... someone PLEASE tell me how to tell the difference between a DC-8 and 707.... I keep getting caught with that mistake. They look like 707s to the untrained eye  Smile ...

As for Alitalia... there are two parked at the old US Air terminal now. They are way too small for L10s, and they have the winglets on the wings much like Pan Am III has.

I'll see if I can get out there and snap some pictures.

After browsing the database, the other may be an A321 perhaps. That one is hard to see from anywhere in the airport, but I'll try and snap a picture of it too.

There are no Alitalia 727s left. You probably saw the AMERIJET 727 freighters which have been parked at GSO for a long time now.

The Alitalia aircraft is a 767-300ER.

The L1011s belong to IAG, the parent company of ILFC and not "ICG", whatever that is meant to be.

geez, i apologize again..... it actually looks liek ICXG, so that is where I got ICG, but I can see the A in it now.
