DL Suspends MSP-ABQ For The Winter

Looking at DL's schedules, MSP-ABQ is being suspended for the winter beginning November 23. The flight returns on February 15, 2013.

This route has been served by NW for a very long time. I wonder why the route is going seasonal.

When NW was still around, basically all traffic from the West Coast and the Northeast was routed to ABQ through MSP. I don't recall if there was ever a MEM-ABQ, but if not, that's almost the entire NW network funneled through MSP which means the route could easily support multiple flights.

Now, SLC takes virtually all the West Coast feed, and ATL also has three daily flights, taking all of the Southeast traffic and probably much of the Northeast as well. Not much left for MSP to grab other than the Upper Midwest.

It's a weird winter cut to the southwest, and It's strange to see it being seasonal. I guess people aren't making wrong turns at ABQ as much as they used to

They're flowing most of that traffic through ATL. Not much demand to head to the Upper Midwest in the middle of the winter, and that's the only area MSP covers that ATL is ineffective for from ABQ.

As you said it has been a long served route. I think Northwest entered the ABQ market in 1992. First with DC-9s, then they used the MD-80 before finally switching it to the Airbus.

I'm not sure there was much traffic from the West to ABQ connecting over MSP, but it was certainly a good place for connections to the Northeast and upper Midwest. I don't remember there ever being a MEM flight.

Not really. ABQ doesn't get the same influx of warm weather seekers that places like PHX and PSP see, as the elevation is much higher and results in cooler temperatures. There's a slight amount of ski traffic going to resorts in northern New Mexico, but not nearly enough to justify adding any flights during the winter.



It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems with just potatoes.

We're not really a snowbird destination. If anything high season for tourists is summer and into fall, with Balloon Fiesta being the bookend.

Not to mention NM ski resorts are more of a regional draw (though I suppose some are really trying to change that), lots of Texans too.

It seems like ABQ can't catch a break. So many flights have been trimmed back these past 2-3 years.  


The reason New Mexico is so windy is because Texas sucks and Arizona blows.

Yep, considering that every summer DL uses some daily 752s on the ATL-ABQ route. However, it looks like DL isn't upgauging any flights for the Balloon Fiesta this year.

Airlines are showing a lot more capacity constraint than they used to a decade ago. Many airports have seen flights downgauged and lost a flight or two due to mergers making routes somewhat redundant. It seems to feel a little worse at ABQ in the last few years as WN's operation at DEN has increasingly taken over many of the connections that used to flow through ABQ.



It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems with just potatoes.
