New Cathay Seat A330 Progress?

Hi All,

I am just curious if anybody knows how far Cathay is along the process of installing the latest generation
seats in their A330s? That is the ones to replace "the torture chair' fixed shell economy seat, and most
specifically if I fly Ex Australia am I likely to get the new seat? I'm thinking Australia is the longest distance for
the A330 at cathay so I would assume it would be first in line to receive the newer configuration, as sleeping is
impossible with the fixed shell seats.

I like Cathay but I do not want to fly on the old seat.

Thanks for your help.

There are 16 aircraft to be retrofitted: (B-HLP to B-HLS, B-HLW and B-LAC to B-LAM). B-LAK to B-LAM are delivered with flat bed 2 and the fixed back economy class seat while the rest have the coffin style business class and fixed back economy class seat. In addition, there are 3 linefit aircraft in service with the latest product, B-LAN to B-LAP with 3 more A330 due to join by the end of this year.

As of today, October 5th, 6 aircraft have been retrofitted with the lastest flat bed 2, premium economy and economy class product (B-LAC to B-LAE, B-LAK to B-LAM). B-HLQ is currently in the hangar for retrofit together with B-LAJ, which will complete the retrofit next week.

The current plan is that all retrofit will complete by the first quarter of 2013.

As for aircraft rotation, you can check whether PEY is available on that flight, as any PEY flight on A330 and B777-300ER will mean new economy class product (not the case for A340 and B747-400). I believe all SYD and MEL flights are operated with the latest product but of course there will always be last minute aircraft rotation.

this might be a little off topic but how about the 777's that do long haul? I love CX but not their seats. i recently cancelled my MXP-HKG because im not sure if all 777's are fitted with the new Y seats. 4 long haul flights with their torture chair is too much already...

thanks in advance!

For B777-300ER, there are 31 aircraft in the fleet. The current cabin config of the fleet is as follow:

3 class configuration with F / Coffin style businss class / Fixed back EY (CX code: 77D)
B-KPE, B-KPG to B-KPI, B-KPK, B-KPL, B-KPS to B-KPX

4 class configuration with F / FB2 business class / PEY / EY (CX code: 77H)
B-KPA to B-KPD, B-KPF and B-KPJ

3 class configuration with FB2 business class / PEY / EY (CX code: 77G)
B-KPY, B-KPZ, B-KQA to B-KQC

All 77D will be retrofitted to become 77H by the end of first quarter 2013. The 77G will remain as it is. There will be around 3 to 4 77G delivery next year. After that, all B777-300ER new delivery should be back to 77H.

Again, if you want to be sure if your B777-300ER flight is being servied by the new economy seat or the fixed back seat, check if PEY cabin is available or not as PEY cabin in 777-300ER mean new economy class seat. I believe most of the retrofitted retrofitted plane are deployed to YVR-JFK, LAX, LHR, CDG (77H) and YYZ (77G). MXP wont be getting the new seat until mid of Q1 or Q2 next year.

Same applies to New Business Class (FB2), based on your list above, i.e. there's no coupling of "coffin" Business Class with Premium Economy.

I can't help wondering what CX must think of this; doubtless this little tip has reached Business travellers' forums in HK and has been shared; it's kind of odd that people could go to the trouble of checking whether Premium Economy is available on a certain route, before booking a completely different class. It just shows what a disaster the "coffin" seats were/are.

I assume by "coffin style" you mean the new business class? All the above aircraft you mentioned have already been retrofitted with the new J. B-KPS to B-KPX were delivered with the new J class cabin installed.

You are right. I stand corrected. The coffin style business class should read FB2 business class instead. The revised list should be as below:

3 class configuration with F / FB2 business class / Fixed back EY (CX code: 77D)
B-KPE, B-KPG to B-KPI, B-KPK, B-KPL, B-KPS to B-KPX

4 class configuration with F / FB2 business class / PEY / EY (CX code: 77H)
B-KPA to B-KPD, B-KPF and B-KPJ

3 class configuration with FB2 business class / PEY / EY (CX code: 77G)
B-KPY, B-KPZ, B-KQA to B-KQC

For A330-300, I can confirm there is no coupling between the coffin style business class and premium economy. If the aircraft has the coffin style business class, then there is no premium economy and the economy seat will be fixed back seat. For B777-300ER, all aircraft have been retrofitted to Flat Bed 2 already, so you don't have to worry about the coffin style businesss class.

However, as I mention before, this is not the case for B747-400 and A340-300. There are four B747-400 (B-HUG, B-HOP, B-HOR and B-HKF) flying with F / Coffin Style Business Class / Premium Economy and Fixed Back Economy Seat (CX code: 74K). The fifith 74K will join the fleet by the end of October. A340-300 retrofit will happen sometime mid of next year and the retrofited A340-300 will have Coffin Style Business Class / Premium Economy and Fixed Back Economy seat (CX code: A34K).

Just to be clear on the type of seat I am talking about:

This is coffin style business class seat:

IMHO, I think both the flat bed 2 and coffin style business class seats have their own advantages. When I travel on the coffin style business class, I feel the seat to be more private and I can sleep better on this seat. However, as I over 6 ft, sometimes I have to rest my leg over the ottoman and that can hurt my leg. For the new business class, the seat has much more shoulder space, storage room and all these attention to details making it such a great seat. The only drawback of the seat, albeit minor, is that I always feel there is a slight bump on the seat when I put it to bed mode. Also, there is no storage for take off and landing.

Add B-KPM to B-KPR to that list..

I like to know if I am getting new economy class seat on my upcoming flight from HK to LA on 10/12 at 11.40pm?

77W is just telling you it's a 777-300ER.. You'd have to look deeper to find out what config it is.

LAX is still the old config right now - 77D; so the 12th of October doesn't get the new Economy. However, move forward to December 10th (you might have meant this date) and you'd get the new seat to LAX (77H)..
