Do All HA Mainland Flights Leave From Z Terminal?

I just booked us on HA flying HNL-PDX on 12/5, and the itinerary says our 767 leaves from the Inter Island terminal, last time I was there HA mainland flights left from the mainland terminal, so my question is, do all mainland flights on HA operate from the Z terminal (as it is referred to on my itinerary) or do some still go from the mainland terminal still?

Because of the capacity and the limited number of gates able to handle the B767 at the inter-island terminal, HA always has and continues to operate out of the overseas terminal (Ewa concourse). However, check in for all HA flights is still located at the "inter-island" terminal, which is why it's reflected on your itinerary as such.

Used to be, HA did check in at both terminals. So what your telling me is, we go to the Inter Island terminal to check in, then schlep over to the mainland terminal to fly back to Portland? Wow, that's not as convenient as it used to be. I know AQ used to operate their DC-10 from the Inter Island terminal, but I always thought just Inter Island flights operated from the aptly named terminal.

Check in for all HA flights as well as baggage drop off is conducted at the Inter-Island Terminal. However, several of HA's flights depart from the Overseas Terminal from gates 14-34. If your flight is departing from the Overseas Terminal, after you have checked in at the Inter-Island Terminal, you can take the escalator upstairs to the free WikiWiki shuttle bus which will transport you to the Overseas Terminal. You can check the departure screens in the Inter-Island Terminal to see which gate your flight is departing from or you can check online at this website that shows all HA departures and gate assignments:

http://hnlairportweb.com/hnlflights/flighttrack.asp

If you are checking in Online and have no checked bags, and you are able to print out your boarding pass, I would suggest you access this website and look for your gate assignment before leaving for the airport. It could make a difference as to where you would want to be dropped off.
None of HA's A330 flights depart from the Inter-Island Terminal. However, there are quite a few 767 flights to the US Mainland that do depart from the Inter-Island Terminal each day. Again, check departure screens or the website on the day of your departure to confirm.

Aloha,
HALFA

Wow, guess it's still worth the $121.00 fare for the return anyway, even with the short schlep to the mainland terminal.

Thanks for explaining this to me HALFA, a lot has changed since I lived there in the 90's. I'm looking forward to my journey on HA, it's been too long since I have been on HA, the fare was too good to be passed up.

It's really not that bad of a walk, or you can take the shuttle. I wasn't thrilled to do it back to baggage claim when I arrived at 6am after flying 14 hours BOI-SEA-LAS-HNL in August, though.

RWA380: You may be pleased to know that the HNL-PDX flight does often depart from the inter-island terminal. I have a friend who travels that route 4+ times a year and being his ride I also have noticed the tendencies. In the past 2 years he has left from the main terminal twice and from the inter-island terminal the rest of the time. I would take your cues from HALFA on what to do and what to expect, but a departure from the inter-island terminal is a quick and relaxing journey post security.

Hey Pohakuloa, Mahalo Nui Loa for your input, I wondered how HA decides from all their flights which depart from what terminal. I actually want it to be the mainland terminal real bad, there are several shops, plus a neat garden to stroll through if your clear security in that terminal, plus you can spot so much more easily than in the Inter Island terminal, best spot there is the roof of the parking structure in front of that terminal.

So does HA check in their International flights also at the Inter Island terminal as well? Or do overseas passengers check in at the mainland terminal?

Lastly, how many of HA's 767 fleet has winglets vs the number who do not have winglets? I have only seen wingletted ones here in PDX lately, just curious as to how good my chances are for getting the winglet 763, as I've never flown one. Actually this trip will have me adding my 9th flown, aircraft type all in HA colors.

D10, L10, DC8, D95, SD330, DH7, 717, now 763.....Cool, I really like flying HA.  Big grin

Actually, if you get to the airport early enough, you can freely walk between the main overseas terminal and inter-island terminal. You'd just have to go through the agricultural inspection before entering the main terminal.

Quoting RWA380 (Reply 9):

B763s with winglets:
N580HA
N581HA
N582HA
N587HA
N588HA
N589HA
N590HA
N592HA

So out of Hawaiian's current fleet of 16 B763s, the remaining 8 do not have winglets installed.

I say this makes you lucky! It has never taken me more than 30 seconds to do the inspection walking to the mainland terminal. I simply love HNL airport and can literally spend hours walking around. The old terminals (especially after the Asian flights have left) are nice and empty and give that sense of the golden days of flying. Can't wait to get back to HNL as I always give myself plenty of time to explore the airport.

This is like my 30th trip between the mainland and Hawaii, not to mention the tons of Inter Island flying I have done from HNL and the few International trips as well, I have never grown tired of the Honolulu airport, Yes I do feel lucky to go back, after years of living there, I get very sad when we depart back to the mainland. I do plan on walking to the mainland terminal vs those less than desirable wiki-wiki busses.

I think it is time to rename the Interisland Terminal to the Hawaiian Airlines terminal. It would save a lot of confusion for those not acquainted with our airport and more in line with what the terminal really is.

Brilliant idea Jack, Other than WP and Go! I guess it is all HA. That is the big change between the last time I was there and now, I was disappointed that there is a chance our Portland flight may leave from the Inter Island terminal, the short walk to the mainland terminal is just fine with me, and the walking around the mainland terminal with the many open air places where you hear the engines of heavy aircraft arriving and departing. I'd much rather spend 2 hours in the mainland terminal than the Inter Island terminal for selfish spotting opportunities, and who knows if I may ever get back there again.
