I was wondering whether there is any "standard" policy for what an airline will do in the advent that they misroute your luggage.

For example, is it still common practice to deliver bags to your "doorstep," rather than forcing you to return to the airport to pick them up?

I'm assuming no compensation is offered unless the airline damages/loses items for which they are liable (which upon glancing at an airline ticket jacket, includes just about any item of great value).

Yes, the airlines will deliver to your home (or hotel or anywhere else you're staying) once you luggage is found. The compensation varies greatly- with the weight being used as primary scale of compensation. Usually, the heavier you bag, you'll get more. However, airlines have been known to give extra $$ if you plead your case.

In the US the weight of the bag is used for compensation on international flights only.
