According multiple sources, Garuda and Etihad are due to announce a partnership that will cover joint operations to as many as 30 destinations in Europe, Americas, Africa and Asia.
Part of the agreement sees Garuda shifting sole European service (Amsterdam) to operate via Abu Dhabi instead of current Dubai routing.

Announcement could be forthcoming as soon as Thursday per EY representative.

At this point shouldn't they just get the SkyTeam join out of the way? How many members are they now doing deals with?

Deal announced.

Subject to regulatory approval, Garuda Indonesia will place its ‘GA’ code on Etihad Airways’ flights from Abu Dhabi to up to 31 destinations in the Middle East, Europe and North America.

Etihad Airways will place its ‘EY’ code on Garuda Indonesia’s services between Jakarta and Denpasar (Bali), and Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur.

Airlines will synchronise schedules and plan to offer 11x weekly flights between Jakarta and Abu Dhabi this winter.
Agreement will also cover customer benefits such as frequent flyer program reciprocity and airport lounge access.

I did not see this coming, i think it's a good move by Garuda. A stronger indication that EY will be joining sky team as well soon.........?

I can envision this scenario :

1. EY joining SkyTeam

2. EY ask AF-KL to buy a large stake in AB so they would be co-owners

3. AB defects to SkyTeam

4. EY ends partnership with AA

5. EY brings VirginAustralia into Skyteam too

Makes sense, seems like etihad is really leaning towards the Skyteam partners. I guess GA will also pick up EY traffic onwards to Europe, with further distribution along Europe to smaller airports by KL.. with EY serving Paris.

Think this is also good news for AF and KL!

I am not saying that EY is definitely joining SkyTeam, but management indications to the contrary do not necessarily mean anything. Remember that a week or so before the announcement of QR's accession to oneworld, Al Baker kept denying vigorously that QR was going to join an alliance.

Next flights: MEX-GRU (AM 77E), GRU-GIG (JJ A320), SDU-CGH (G3 73H), GRU-MEX (JJ A332).

Al Baker was caught publicly lying (saying "no" instead of "no comment") then flip-flop himself in less than 1 week's time.

Only Walsh thinks he's an honest businessman worth alliancing with.

Seems Garuda overnight has gotten a European and Middle East network virtually free.

Good move.

True but let's not forget SQ officially granted VA permission to utilize the Virgin brand across the Pacific and in turn have ticketing agreements... Plus VA signed deals with NZ too...

The stumbling block for EY would've been AF. That problem seems to have been solved already. I really think it is only a matter of time.
