Airplane Graveyard In Miami?!

Ok, I was watching The Travel Channel's new television series "Airport 24/7: Miami" (Great series by the way!!) and I saw something very interesting. Specifically on the Tuesday October 16th episode about halfway through. The cameras went to a remote part of what appeared to be the MIA airport and they were reporting about an old MD-80 (I think) which the owner hadn't paid storage fees on in a while. The airport then decided to scrap it and sell the metal and parts for $60,000.

I think the bigger story is that in the background of the MD-80 I saw about 10-12 other older looking airplanes parked in what appeared to be a storage area well far away from the Control Tower (I saw a tall brown-ish Control Tower in the background). One of the aircraft looked like a DC-10 with a lime green tail.

Is there really long-term storage at MIA airport and if so, why MIA? Isn't it too wet and humid for storage?

To be clear:

They actually cut the tail off "On-Location" during this episode!

Also, I pulled up the current Google Earth image at MIA and I didin't see any signs of a graveyard. Maybe the Miami Airport Authority owns the other Miami airports too and perhaps there is some storage going on there...?

Opa Locka i think having seen it. The hangars shown in that segment didn't look like any i recognized from recent visits to MIA? OPF is also a home to a couple aircraft "recyclers" and a large number of private aircraft.

I didn't see the show, but reading the description in the OP, yes, Opa Locka seems to be the likely candidate.

MIA has a good amount of maintenance areas for such a small amount of land the airport covers but long term and remote parking its not a thing it does much of anymore. There are some older planes parked at MIA once in a while and some planes that are parked there for a while but I am pretty sure what you are talking about is in OPF.
OPF is also ran by Miami-Dade aviation Dept.

OPF has always been a scrap yard, not so much in long term parking as you said it is not the best place for that with the humidity and salty air.

MIA doesn't really have a long term aircraft storage area even though there are quite a few aircraft that have been parked in front of the MRO's facilities for quite some time now. The Hewabora 762 and a few MD80's come to mind (Santabara Airlines and Surinam Airways) and some Douglas props. But, there has never been an aircraft fully scrapped on location in MIA, at least not that I know of (otherwise there would have been photos in the database by now). It looks like the OP saw images or footage from OPF and not MIA.

I've been living here for 4 years now and never ever noticed a graveyard at MIA nor FLL. As flymia said there are many maintenance companies right next to the NW 36th ST (Such as Comodore, Commercial Aviation, etc) that hold aircrafts to be repaired, repainted, fitted, etc. Most probably, as the images that flymia brought up can show, the episode was filmed at OPF where most of the old frames get scrapped. Not so long ago there were some frames from VIASA, Aerolineas Argentinas, Air Plus Comet, to mention some... Also OPF serves a very important amount of private flights and serves as a base for some maintanenance companies too.

Never is an absolute word.that I am always reticent to use.

I lived in Miami Springs from 1977 to 1981 and flew cargo a/c out of the infamous "Corrision Corner" on the northwest section of MIA. I personally saw at least one each of the following aircraft types completely scrapped on site at MIA.

DC-3, DC-4, DC-6, DC-6B, DC-7B and C, DC-8, B-707, B-720, Lockheed Constellation 749 through 1049, Curtis C-46, Convair 240, Martin 202 and 404, Lockheed L-188 Electra, Bristol Britania, Canadair CL-44, and TWO De Havilland Comets - a 2A and a 4C!

MIA was the coolest place to start a flying career...

FLL used to have numerous Airborne Express YS-11s stored there. Until around 2000, both airports were known to have numerous stored aircraft. I suppose both airports wanted to clean up their image.

That must be it. When I went through MIA on September 30 I noticed a mini-graveyard on the far side of the airfield from the terminal buildings. What really caught my eye was a QF 737-400 which had been abandoned sans titles

The YS-11s were still at FLL six months ago. They have been there for nearly 15 years.

Wow, the days of "Corrosion Corner." Brings back memories of that old Convair 880 in front of the Baker school of aviation. As I said in many other threads; it's a sin that MIA is neglecting their rich aviation history. Their web site has lacked a history section for several years.

Zippyjet, when I was in Miami in the late '70s it was an ex-Belize Airways/ex-United Airlines Boeing 720 at the George T. Baker school. But a Convair 880 almost ended up there in about 1978 when it overran 27L and stopped just short of LeJuene Road!

Do you remember who G.T. Baker was?

I'll admit, I'm now having a senior moment. And a few weeks ago when i flew home from MIA I noticed a military jet in front of the Baker school. Did some also call Corrosion Corner "Cockroach Alley or Corner.?"

Corrosion corner and Cochroach corner were the main nicknames.

George T. Baker was the founder of National Airlines. He moved the company from Jacksonville to Miami in 1940 and built a beautiful new hangar and office building. By the late '50s National needed more space so they built that giant cantilever hangar accross Lejuene road, later the final National hangar/headquaters was put up in 1974 near the main terminal.

Baker donated the original hangar and offices to the Dade County school system provided they named it after him.

The 4 YS-11's are still there, and so is the Gulfstream I thats tucked into the middle of them. Most of the C402's that were stored there have been choped or had the wing spar's repaired.

About 6-8 months ago we saw one of the YS-11's get pulled out onto Taxiway Echo and an idle runup was done of the #1 engine.

N880 is long gone. When I fly into MIA now, it just doesn't seem the same. As the ship captains of the early 20th century who remember when the harbors were filled with sails, and then saw only smoke and steam.

I too was in MIA during the 70s-80s and was a great place. As it happens I was working at Eastern the night this happened and saw it run off the end of 9L (was not 27L).
We were working on a 727 outside (as aircraft cleaners if you can believe that now) on the south side of the T hangar when the 880 came down the runway making a lot of noise, and we all knew it couldn't stop. The amazing thing is it just about did and went off nose into the ditch. Thankfully nobody was seriously hurt, but as in the recent TV show about the 727 intentional crash in Mexico, the engines (or at least some) kept running for hours, and were still going when I went home about 8am I think.

Was one scary thing to see, and from then on any long takeoffs were watched with new interest, and there were a lot on those days with DC-8s, 707s and even the prop jobs from corsion corner.

Having only passed through MIA several times I have never had the opportunity to visit any air museums in that area. Are there not any museums of flight or other efforts to capture that rich aviation history? I'm thinking of early PanAm and their extensive history down there. Regards to all.
