Yesterday, I saw the movie "Argo" which was set in Tehran during the US hostage crisis.
A Swissair 747, in SR's 1980s paint scheme, is featured in several of the movie's scenes.
I thought SR served THR with DC-8s in 1980. Did SR serve THR with 747s, or was this an oversight on the part of the film makers?
Going OT, I thought Argo was an exceptionally good movie. Even though I knew the movie's ending before I saw it, I thought the movie did a great job of building tension, while at the same time getting the audience to genuinely care about the movie's characters. I encourage everyone, especially those of you who are old enough to remember the hostage crisis, to see Argo - you will not regret it!

At that time, SR only had two 747-200s and as far as I'm aware, they only ever went to JFK. DC8s would have been far more likely for the THR route - possibly the odd DC10 now and then, but almost certainly the 747s never flew to Tehran.
Haven't seen the movie yet, but I was reading some of the stories about what happened, and one of the rescued six commented to Mendez before boarding that the plane's name was actually Aargau--and said something along the lines of you guys manage to arrange everything. Being the true A.nutter geek that I am, I googled it, and discovered that Swissair did indeed have a plane named Aargau circa 1979-1981, and it was actually a DC-8.
The plane wound up working as a freighter for Airborne Express, before being scrapped in 2002 or so.

The movie is excellent, and by in large they did a great job of making things realistic, but this scene, though very enjoyable to watch, is only true to life in the extend that it was a Swissair plane that took the rescuees out of Iran. That said, it was a great scene.
Without giving away too much of the film for those who haven't seen it, there are two plane flubs in the movie - one involves the fact that nobody would fly a twin between IAD and LHR in 1980. Another is the SR 747, which is a -300, which didn't exist in 1980 and definitely wasn't on the ZRH-THR route. When watching the film I thought that might be a DC-9 route in reality. Later on I found the same information as US330 did, that it was the DC-8-62.
To be honest though, this is a really enjoyable film, and the flubs are minor and totally forgivable.
I think filmmakers prefer to use 747s in situations like this because they are so universally recognized and so dramatic, and when you see the film, you'll see why they wanted to build the drama as much as possible for this scene. The 747 is also an icon of the 1970s, which probably helps the atmosphere even more, where the DC-8 might not register in pop culture the same way.
