Transaero Applies For SFO Service

Open Joint Stock Company Transaero Airlines today applied with the DOT to add San Francisco as a service point in addition to Los Angeles, Miami and New York gateways.

Transaero states it intends to offer seasonal twice weekly scheduled service between Moscow Domodedovo Airport and SFO begining March 31, 2013 per below schedule.

Mon/Thu
DME-SFO 1200-1320
SFO-DME 1520-1435

No equipment is listed, but the request makes comment that available Transaero fleet compromises of both 777 and 747 models.

FINALLY!! Russia back at SFO.

I would guess 777 considering that UA has been doing some heavy maintenance on theirs. I believe some of the 777's are ex-UA.

Per the Russia-side application, UN also intends to add additional service to Miami, but via Shannon to compliment the non-stops.

I recall hearing once that Sacramento also has a very large Russian community. Can anybody confirm that? This announcement is great news. Is there any reason why the DOT wouldn't approve the application?

Who wants to fly on UN, they are a horrible airline with mediocre service, let SU expand its service to North America. Why is SU letting a charter carrier like UN outgrow it in North America?

Considering the majority of travel between the countries originates in Russia, and is made up of Russian holiday makers, UN is quite suited for the task.

SU on the other hand is a network carrier, it needs certain schedule consistency and mix of business travelers to make a flight work.

Can they really make money on twice weekly service? I never understand how airlines make routes work less than daily/ 6x a week. Not to mention does the crew sit in SFO the whole time waiting for the flight back?

SU will be back at SFO, time will show. Aircraft logistics made SFO hard to work back in the day with the two 777s that they had.

Aeroflot has a ton of planes on order, expansion will come naturally. UN is more of a leisure airline, so twice weekly makes sense for them.

If this happens, would UN use the US CBP pre-clearance facility? If so, would they permit pick-up/drop-off at SNN or would they not permit any local traffic?
