According to www.thevssource.com, Virgin operated 3 charters on 29/10 to St. Louis/Boston for the Rams/Patriots.

They used A343/6 and 747 so surely it's not a good sign that they have this much slack in their fleet?

(Today being the exception with numerous aircraft grounded due to Sandy)

Given they have a stream of A330 deliveries.... and 340 retirements I am sure they were able to shuffle a few things round.... They have done these chatrers previously too,

They bid (and won) the deal with the NFL three years ago so it's not like they didn't know it was coming. A five year contract so will be doing the London teams for at least the next two years and I'm sure all airlines plan on doing a few charters to supplement income.

The good old days: Delta L-1011s at MSY

It's often worth cancelling scheduled services to fill these sorts of charters because they are so financially lucrative. That hasn't happened in this case, but I know of other recent cases when airlines have cancelled services (or just not scheduled them to run on a particular day) to free up aircraft.
