About 10 years ago MD did some experiments with engines similar to a turbo prop. As far as I know, the tests were successful but the engines and planes were never produced.

The engines were jet engines I think, with a prop-like fan in front of the core. I think that the idea was to have the performance advantages of a prop with the cruise advantages of a jet.

Does anybody know anything about this and what ever happened to it.

This topic was recently discussed in the Tech/Ops forum.

Here is the link, has some good info and pics.

The engine was being developed by General Electric and was planned to be the launch engine for the MD-90 during the AC's development stage, but was later discarded because of vibration problems.
