Rumor: Virgin To Open Dar Es Salaam Early 2013?

- Nairobi is the 7th busiest airport in Africa with 5.8 millions passengers
- Combined together Dar es Salaam (1.8 millions) and Kilimanjaro (0.65) would rank roughly 15 -16th

JRO has been on BA's wishlist for years, but due to crewing issues, has not been possible. I would suspect VS's main destination on this routing will be JRO. Could have some potential.

Well I believe NBO was also dropped with the increasing terrorism risks / security issues.

I can;t really see them launching any new (non remedy) routes next year and even if they did I would expect more Indian routes.

If VS launches a flight LHR-JRO-DAR-LHR, the airline is going head on with KLM's long-established daily flight AMS-JRO-DAR-AMS, which KLM is - for the first time - enhancing with a 2x weekly dedicated MD11 AMS-JRO-AMS over the peak winter tourism period Dec 2012-March 2013.

VS better be warned that KLM is the closest thing Europe has to a low-cost long-haul carrier, or a tough price competitor !!

If VS has a spare wide bodied aircraft available as well as good slots to enable USA connections via LHR in both directions, then DAR is not the best option to consider when there are other routes which can guarantee higher S/F year round and at higher yields too.

These include BLR, DAC, ISB, LHE and CAI.

I must say that DAR might not look like a big destination, but it is, good loads of premium traffic, KLM everytime i take the flight is pretty full in Business, Economy and premium Economy, Same with Qatar, BA, Emirates, KQ... Egyptair is not so good usually and I have never flown with TK.

It´s a good mix of tourist and business and cargo, don´t forget cargo, good loads as well, flowers specially. Both in Kilimanjaro and DAR.

Yes they are really going strong on the route, maybe they knew that VS is planning to go as well. By the way Kilimanjaro is growing as well, now Rwandair, Kenya Airways, more flight from Ethiopian, Qatar Airways...

Don´t forget that some of the traffic can also do the triangle like the KLM pax do, they leave the plane in Kilimanjaro, go to the park (Serengeti, Manyara, Ngorongoro), from Arusha or Kilimanjaro fly to Zanzibar and then From there to DAR to KLM via Precision Air, there are plenty of them doing it everyday.

Yes and also much more difficult markets to make it work.


The flight they had into NBO was in a very bad schedule, because leaving NBO at something like 11 am must have been very limiting for the A343, often i saw them and i really though they will not take off, because they were running and running on the runuway, then they start climbing soooo slowly.... like a russian plane almost.....

In order to maximize the pay load and the connectivity they should leave NBO in the evening like Swiss, BA, KLM, SN, KQ (LHR, CDG, BKK).

I don´t know why they didn´t, someone told me that it was a slot issue but shortly after that I saw SN start flying to NBO with an A333, so the slot was there..... Must be for the same reason QR can´t fly to MBA....  Big grin

Slots are restricted at LHR - Which explains why SN started flying as they dont fly NBO-LHR!

OK, so if BA, with its extensive network feed can make this work only three times a week on an aircraft that is smaller than anything VS has, how is Virgin going to make it work? Once a week?

Surely there are more obvious uses of a slot and aircraft that Dar-es-Salaam?
