Mmmm, I am not too sure, Dublin is not that far away, it is clear they want more business and trying to attract more airlines to fly from the US.

To be honest when I clicked on the thread I thought it was abolished on all flights, but only on US flights.

Could BHD and BFS not work together??? Say BFS handle the long haul flights (US middle east and North Africa) Basically anywhere BHD (UK and Spain etc) can't handle and BHD handle the rest and they share profits between them and pay bills together, I know its never going to happen but could it work if they wanted to?

Just a question, which is pretty stupid I am sure!!

It was reduced to the same levels as short haul tax for the then Continental Airlines BFS-EWR route. This is a very welcome development for the Province which has been hemorrhaging traffic down to DUB . Will it produce anymore traffic who knows but it will do a lot to save the BFS-EWR route and we could see a Gulf carrier take a look at serving BFS.

This will (quite rightly) open the floodgates for some sort of action if other UK airports aren't allowed to do the same. APD is hurting regional airports all over the UK, you can't give to one without the other, regardless of its proximity to another airport. I'm sure MAN, BHX, NCL et al would love to have this opportunity to help them grow.

I guess NI can argue its cut off from the UK mainland bordered by another country that has an unfair advantage so I don't think it will wash that NCL MAN should get exceptional rules like NI . You have car/rail/bus links to many other parts of the UK which NI does not.

I'm not saying that's my view but just I can see the argument.

I completely agree with you and I understand the logic behind this move. It's much easier to jump in a car and drive from NI to Dublin than it is MAN to DUB for example. And a dam sight cheaper too. But these regional airports in the UK would love the prospect of little or no APD. Route networks could be expanded, passenger numbers increased etc. that's what the governments just don't get, lower the tax and revenues will most probably rise due to increased pax and new routes. I can really see regional airports being a little unhappy with this decision and may push for some sort of solution on the UK mainland.

Very simplified example of course, but it was reported that the big rise in the cost of petrol/diesel this year has seen huge falls in the amount of litres sold, sure it was something like 5.5bn litres less than last year so revenues to the government were down. Lower the tax on fuel so it isn't so expensive and people will fill up more often, raising revenues again. (I know the price fluctuates/rises due to the world oil price not just tax added but its just an example to prove the point)

Absolutely brilliant news for BFS which was clearly going to struggle competing for business with DUB. Like it or not, this was in part prompted by the then CO (now UA) flight's threatened withdrawal from BFS. Glad to see this ridiculous tax cut for all long haul routes on all airlines which should hopefully prompt more interest in NI.

I even wrote to my MP about it!

So, the Northern Ireland devolved administration has the powers to abolish aviation tax, but in Scotland they don't (or choose not to)?

Indeed and the public transport connections to DUB are tailored to that too. Take for instance around the border counties you can get from Newry to Dublin Airport every hour 24/7 but trying to get to BFS or BHD from Newry at 2,3,4am to get an 0600/0700 out of BHD you have no option other than the car.

Always amazes me even in off peak times the amount of cars going down the M1 with Northern cars to DUB and the amount of people willing to take the journey even for short haul flights let alone long haul. I guess this all adds to BFS/BHD argument that they are being killed by the APD. Even myself I have the option of 3 Airports in around an hour but 90% is out of DUB and BFS/BHD account for only 10% .

Another disadvantage for BFS is no US pre clearance which DUB of course has.

Great news, Hope UA continue to do well and maybe even think of adding another destination down the line. Has AA , DL or US sniffed around BFS? I can imagine BFS - BOS would work well with a 757.

Well we have seen various seasonal flights and charters over the years so maybe a MCO June to Sept would work. IIRC Airtours/My Travel operated some.
