Like buying a base model car.

No AC, base manual transmission, AM/FM radio, manual windows and locks, no metallic paint, etc.

They are differences which save the airline money and have a direct fuel saving result. Installing an aesthetically pleasing cabin is an unnessasary expense for an airline like Ryanair. People fly them because they are very cheap- they don't offer any thrills and people don't expect them onboard.

And also maintains their value when in the future the aircraft are sold/returned to the lessor as a set with standard interiors across the group of aircraft.

Plus if you give passengers a positive experience, they'll just return with higher expectations... No thrills.

I would disagree with his opinions on wearing seatbelts if the recent 727 crash experiment was anything to go on.

Could only be Michael O Leary who would put profit before passenger safety. I didn't think flying Ryanair could get any more uncomfortable and public transport like. But standing for an entire flight? No thanks!

Re Reply 10. Now you know we have had these discussions before!   Michael is a fantastic publicist. Advertising is very expensive and he hets his publicity for free. No you have not seen paid for toilets - or standing room -nor will you see no seat belts - or single pilot planes etc etc etc.

BTW He is of course right about seat belts and crashes.The belt (in these circumstances) is to keep each body on the correct seat for later identification. However in severe turbulence (like over alps - Mr O leary?) it could save your life.

Anyway us just writing about it is what he wants!

All his statements are to give the impression of ultra cheep - he is not!!! He has a near monopoly on many routes and his fares are far from cheap - thats what the report and accounts show - increased revenue from increased prices.

Don't watch what he says watch what he does.Like upgrading (for a cost) to numbered seating to try and cream off some business pax. Thats what he is 'really' doing. None of the silly stuff above.

It's standard if a new customer comes in and orders a 737NG. Existing customers can choose between Sky Interior or the classic interior.

Boeing doesn't do things for free, so they likely charge more, but the sky interior weighs less and the pivot bins should require less maintenance, so it should have a positive effect on the bottom line.

Ryanair's average one-way fare - including ancillaries - was €57.92 in its latest (2012) FY results ((€3,504.0m scheduled revenues + €886.2m ancillaries)/75.8m passengers), and its average sector length was around 1,200km. While those two variables are averages, I don't really see how that's "far from cheap". Source: its 2012 annual report.

I'm sure pax wont notice it anyway.. We eat, sleep, read a book or look outside.. why look at a ceiling or a wall?

No. Boeing does not offer a retrofit option. If an airline wants to put pivot bins on an older 737NG, they'll have to go to an aftermarket provider to do it.

Exactly. Heath Tecna does a Sky Interior look-alike retrofit, with pivot bins and coloured LED lighting.

Although it must be said that Ryanair has taken this mantra to extremes as they have also done away with stuff like window blinds, reclining seats etc. This is something most airlines buying second hand planes expect and have to retrofit at extra cost (not sure about the window blinds - can they be retrofitted without replacing the whole interior wall elements?)

FR still has window blinds, at least on my last two flights in and out of Budapest. I remeber because a kid was nonstop playing with it.
