Is EI Looking Seriously At The 737MAX?

I have read that EI are looking at the both A320 NEO and 737 MAX. Is it a case of going through the motions of looking at the MAX when its a more or less done deal they will order the NEO in the future?

EI is IMHO not in a position to look at anything in the way of new aircraft. It is the subject of a takeover offer at a price well above its current market capitalisation. It cannot commit to anything until that process is complete. On top of that it has a massive pension defecit which it must fund in some way or another before it can make any capital expenditure committments.

It's no harm to stay ahead of the game should the takeover deal with FR fall through.

There has been much speculation that EI will purchase the A321 NEO for its transatlantic service from SNN and possibly BHD/BFS that can't support an A330 service.

EI's 3Q results, announced yesterday, were very positive and show that the airline is currently doing very well; raising financing would be quite easy for the airline. I understand, however, that for now, the A32XNEO -v- 737 MAX competition has been put on hold and EI will be looking to acquire further A319s to replace A320s as they come off lease.

The EU Competition authority has very recently indicated its opposition to the plan by FR; while this is obviously not the final word, it is very difficult to see FR's plan go through; of more concern to FR should be a ruling by the UK Competition Authority on the 19th November.

EI's line is that it has no further liability here, although it is currently facing the prospect of industrial action.

It should always stay ahead of the game, of course, but there's no deal as such; EI doesn't want to be taken over by FR; if possible EI wants FR to be forced to sell its shareholding.

I would imagine that any 'interest' in the 737MAX is to ensure that Airbus aren't complacent in assuming that EI are going to buy Airbus no matter what. Although you'd think that they'd see through that.

Does anyone know if EI were among the airlines that viewed the 787 when it was in Dublin earlier in the year?

It stayed in the Aer Lingus hanger at Dublin, I'm sure management would have viewed the aircraft at some point.

I think the likelihood of EI acquiring 787s is very low; a few years ago, when our economy was even worse than it is now, I would have said that the A350s on order were too much aircraft; now, EI's t/a business is growing quite strongly (10% year on year) and with increasing connections through DUB, that can only improve and we will problbly see a stage where, for EI, the 350s can't come soon enough.

The only circumstances I could see where EI might acquire 787s would be if EY bought a larger share and they decided to distribute a larger 789 order among its "partner" carriers, EI and AB. However, I don't see that as being likely ... but lots can happen over the next few years.
