Does anybody know, what plane really served for the escape of the US citizens? They show a 743 but I guess a DC-8 at these time would have been more realistic. A310s came later, I think? Any registration number? I also guess the Iranians didn't really find out about the operation before the plane acutally left Iranian airspace?

Thank you both, so we can assume it was DC-8-62 HB-IDL taking them back. I find the true plot even more dramatic than the one shown in the movie. Guess one could have created more tension with just having to wait forever in the transit hall or by the officer going away just to come back with a cup of tea and the technical issue and so on.

Minicraft models could come out with a model of the actual Swissair DC-8 Aargau that the six flew out on out of THR like they did with the USAF 707 that flew the rest of the embassy hostages flew out on when they were released in January 1981. But the issue would be the faux SR 747-300 used in the movie.

Artistic, yes, but it worked well. If it was "as happened" then it would've been a pretty boring story. Throwing in some tension for the characters to overcome provides for a satisfying ending.
Also, all the shots from ONT brought some tears to my eye.
Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun.
