BA A380 Makes First Flight

According to the link above, BA's first A380 G-XLEA made its first flight on Friday from Toulouse.

No information on A380production.com yet but most first flight aircraft tend to reposition to Finkenwerder. I guess as this is the first flight of the HGW version, that more testing at TLS will be required before it moves to outfitting.

Also in the link is a further link to the proposed seat map for the BA A380. Seems a bit messy if you ask me with J and Y split across two decks.


Next Flights: LHR-LBA (319-SK), MAN-ARN (736-SK), ARN-LHR (763-BA), LHR-CPH (CR9-SK), CPH-LHR (320-SK), LHR-IAH (744-BA)

I don't think any airline will put less seats on the main deck than on the upper deck. The jet bridge distribution being one good reason for this.

I quite agree - but I think the reason is width of the upper deck. In J, they are showing only 7 seats abreast, with only one rearward-facing seat in the middle of each row. The paired rearward-facing centre seats in the 8 seat abreast layout is very popular with couples. I suspect that by splitting the Y and J cabins, BA are trying to not lose the rearward facing seat pairs.

Personally, I'd hate the centre single seat on the upper deck - it would be very claustrophobic with the sliding partitions up.

I can see this arrangement being a mess at boarding - if you were in J or Y, how do you know which air bridge to use?

Interestingly they have put loos in the dead space on the front upper deck where other carriers put wasteful "lounges" which, in my experience, no one ever seems to use. I'd prefer a spacious loo over a cold and clinical lounge any day (are you listening, Qantas, Air France and Korean?)

I should think evacuation certification as well has an impact on how passenger numbers are spread over the decks.

Agree. Some interesting cabin layout compromises there....wouldn't want to be on that last row of WT+ between the toilets for 12 hours, but the rear upper deck WT cabin should be nice

Upper deck front is going to be the Club cabin of choice...quiet and no interloping riff raff!

There has been extensive info on the A380production.com website, including links to plenty of pics.

One thing of note about this layout is the distinct lack of toilets on the main deck?

Depending on how you look at the layout there is no toilets in Club World at all !? Unless the 4 toilets between J and Y for J pax only? I assume that these will not be use of J & Y pax?

If so then the whole of main deck Y (199 pax) are required to use 4 toilets at the very back of the plane. This seems very poor and also requires pax from row 11 back to use toilets at row 32.

Is that correct or am I miss-reading the map?

I agree. I think they should put all of J downstairs, and move F to the forward cabin upstairs. Stick a big galley behind F, then have 60W and 150-160Y.

Downstairs, J in the forward cabin (I guess about 5, maybe 6 rows), then in the second cabin with those galleys/toilets shifted back into the front 3-4 rows of Y. That then leaves about 150-160 Y on the lower deck and means 12F/90J/60W/310Y which is pretty similar overall to this proposal.

The biggest drawback is that F would share a bridge with W/Y (unless they boarded downstairs with J and walked up the forward stairs).

The other way to go is to go totally wild with the premium seating, and do something like 14-18F/120J/70W/200Y (400 total). That would allow them to merge flights to highly premium cities that have too much Y capacity but fly full premium cabins on the 744.

well its 12F 97J 55W and 303Y for a total count of 469

Splitting the J cabin may work well in fact. Big big J cabins lose a certain "quality" feel and can stretch crew.

I would however properly reserve judgement until I see n actual detailed scale plan!!

Sorry, I didn't realise those figures were confirmed... The BA Source config is probably far more realistic than mine as well.

I think it makes perfect sense to split the JCL cabin between two decks. One of the biggest complaints passengers make of existing JCL A380 cabins is that the cabin is so large, service can take some time and there is no exclusive feel. Provided BA have enough crew resources across both decks, it should be a good experience for the passengers.

Now that is a lot of revenue earning. BA must be dead excited about this bird coming on line, like the rest of us.

The use of the upstairs front space for toilets is a great idea.

It's a shame they didn't do a first class bar area which would have been a nice add on to the first class cabin experience.

The great thing about the A380 is the ability to stand up and walk around, and not to stay stuck in your seat.

Agreed. On the EK 380 I felt like J was quite impersonal and cramped. I spent about 3 hours at the bar which is spacious by comparison but doesn't have bar stools

BA are being quite hush hush about what exact interior specifications look like. We could still see something like a bar on the A380.

QF doesn't. The space on the right is the lounge, the space on the left is a galley/crew area with a small self service bar near the top of the stairs.

Everyone else does though.
