Yup, could barely see the car in front of me on my way into work. It was very thick. I was surprised to hear an aircraft come in on 13L shortly after I got to work at like 6:30am....couldn't see it, but I heard it LOL.

I notice that DL 269 is quickly airborne again to JFK where DL 120 is scheduled to depart BOS at noon. Is this due to crew duty hour issues? Was it necessary top ferry a new flight crew for DL 120 from either JFK or ATL?

Most probably as you suggest is duty, TLV could be easily 4 pilots and GRU 2 or maybe 3, so the duty time for the former must be quite longer, also sometimes when weather diversions, refueling is an issue, so now the problem to ferry a crew to BOS is that you need a flight and also a whole set of crew. 2 pilots and 8-10 cabin crew.... so you might finish all the Stby for that day and it´s still early morning, i think rebooking pax in other flights is a better idea, some will be connecting so you can even send them via ATL from BOS or direct if flight is available.

If the fog is so bad and ILS if it´s not a CAT 3 will not help much. When thick fog and Low Visibility procedures are in force a big issue is holding times and taxi in and out but i´m not sure if someone was taking off, LVP in force slow down the operation of an airport very much, so fuel calculation is very important to know how many mins can you hold.

Delta also diverted its BOG-JFK flight to PHL and its LAX and SFO red-eyes to ALB.

The ILS wasn't working last night. It's funny, I mentioned to my captain when I was doing the preflight around 9pm last night that it was starting to get a little foggy and we could definitely see it after we took off. Glad I'm heading back west today and not down to NY.

LA530 and LA532 are both at BOS. JJ8080 operating GRU-JFK just arrived at JFK from IAD.

Both LAN 530 & 532 cancelled this morning. I guess American Airlines was handling them in BOS. Both flights cleared customs and AAL was rebooking passengers to JFK and beyond. There are two flight plans to JFK at 1800 tonight however.

Found this NOTAM summary

JFK 10/264 JFK NAVIGATION INSTRUMENT LANDING SYSTEM RUNWAY 22L DISTANCE

JFK 10/268 JFK NAVIGATION INSTRUMENT LANDING SYSTEM RUNWAY 4R MIDDLE MARKER OUT

JFK 10/279 JFK NAVIGATION INSTRUMENT LANDING SYSTEM RUNWAY 4R CATEGORY 2/3 NOT

JFK 11/046 JFK NAVIGATION INSTRUMENT LANDING SYSTEM RUNWAY 22R LOCALIZER OUT OF

So the only CAT III runways (04R & 22L) would be unable to accept any CAT III landings.

Only CAT II landing runway available would be 13L.

Things are still pretty much a mess after the storm for efficient operations in limited visibility conditions.

I was working a flight into JFK early this morning. It was about 04:30, and we came VERY close to diverting. In fact we'd pretty much already decided to divert to EWR when the RVR to runway 13L came up juuuuuust enough for us to complete the approach. We did a Cat II to an autoland.

It was an eerie approach. The top of the fog layer was at about 500 feet or so, and it was clear on top. You could see the approach and lead-in lights flickering through the murk from above. The weather was perfectly clear except for the last 20 or 30 seconds of the approach.

I had never seen JFK so foggy. Taxiing was a real challenge. Without centerline lights on the taxiways, it would have been more or less impossible.

Commuting home to BOS later in the day, I noticed two LAN 767s parked at the AA gates at Terminal B.

The fog persisted until mid-morning in the tri-state area. I suspect a number of diversions and delays.
By the way, today is anniversary 11 years ago of the crash of AA 587 from JFK.

LAN had a 3rd flight divert to BOS earlier, before 530 and 532 but I don't have the flight number. 530 and 532 pax cleared customs in Terminal E and AA handled the departure back to JFK out of Terminal B. I didn't know JFK had 3 LAN flights a day...530 and 532 were not very full either.

Wow, thanks for pointing that out.

That was the last large-scale fatal crash involving a US major carrier. * ELEVEN years ago!

That's a record, by the way.

(* Yes, I'm excluding the one fatality from the Southwest overrun at Midway several years back.)
