Do British charter airlines base aircraft in scandinavia over the winter in the same way they do in Canada?
Are these aircraft operated on the airline's own flights or on behalf of other airlines?
My question is for two reasons:-
1 I heard a rumour that Air 2000 are basing a 757 in Copenhagen this winter flying to Mexico, Thailand, India and Grand Canaria. Apparently using British pilots and Scandinavian cabin crew.
2 On airliners.net I have seen varoius photos of Airtours 757s at Finnish airports (this winter and last winter) such as Helsinki and Tampere
Thankyou for any info you have - British charters normally only fly to Scandinavia at Christmas with special "Santa" flights to Rovaniemi, Ivalo, Kittila etc.

Well I do know that Britannia has based a Boeing 757 in Helsinki (although registered with a Swedish ID SE-DUP) and uses it on charter flights to the Mediterranean. I believe this is in direct competition with Finnish state airline Finnair (a member of the oneworld alliance) although it has in it's leisure fleet one MD-11 (registered OH-LGD and recently changed to an all-economy config for this specfic purpose), which it owns, and five Boeing 757-2Q8's, which I understand to be leased from ILFC. I saw the Britannia plane in HEL and it was behind my plane (a Finnair MD-82 OH-LMN) on my trip to Barcelona. I don't know about them going all the way the Carribean, etc. but I do know they fly to the Mediterranean.

Yes, is correct that Air 2000 will be basing a 757 in Copenhagen this winter. They will fly to Mexico, Thailand and India (not Grand Canaria) for the danish travel agency "Alletiders". According to my informations it´s G-OOOC they will use on the Copenhagen routes.

This is second-hand knowledge, but apparently Britannia will also be operating a 767 from Helsinki to Thailand this winter season or summer 2000 season.
The future of Britannia in Helsinki is unsure, though, and much depends on the sale of certain travel agent company (owned by Finnair) to Star Tours (represented in Finland by Fritidsresor). It's been rumoured that a condition from Finnair's side for that deal to happen is that Fritidsresor will concentrate its Finland-based flights to guess which airline. I don't know how big a percentage of Britannia's traffic here is sold via Fritidsresor, so I won't speculate wether this arrangement will result in Britannia's retreatment from the Finnish charter market, IF it is to be made. Nothing is, after all, confirmed yet.

Fritidsresor is owned by Thompsons Holidays, which if you don't know is Britannia's UK parent who they do almost all their flying for.
If the deal goes ahead, and you are right about the Finnair condition, you probably wont see Britannia in Finland anymore!
Are Britannia's Finnish flights operated by British aircraft/crews or by their Swedish subsidiary Britannia AB?
This would seem to make more sense - it's a long and expensive crew transfer to Helsinki from the UK
Also, Air 2000 out of CPH have British pilots and Danish cabin crew - what nationality fly for Airtours out of HEL?

Britannia's flights from HEL are operated by Britannia Nordic AB which has four B757-200's: SE-DUL, SE-DUN, SE-DUO and SE-DUP. The rotation of one plane is about 2 weeks.
Usually cabin crews are Finnish, but pilots come from an other country, perhaps from Sweden or UK? They have about 50 Finnish cabin attendants here. I don't know, if Swedish and Norwegian C/C's sometimes serve from HEL, at least Britannia had Finnish crew once a week on these routes at last summer:
Helsinki- KOS /- KOS-Stockholm-KOS /- KOS- Helsinki and once a week also
Helsinki- Faro/- Faro-Bergen(Norway)- Faro/- Faro- Helsinki.
One member of Britannia's cabin crew told me that one of those 757's, SE-DUL, isn't good for charter flights. The galleys aren't designed for charter flights so they are much more smaller than in the normal charter version of 757. The problem is that they don't have enough space for all food what is needed during flight! They have to put for example all coffee thermos flasks in plastic bags and place them in the toilets during landing and takeoff!!! They also have to "hide" all sandwiches and cabin crews meals to the rubbish trolley!!!!!!!!!
