Seems United may be up to their old tricks. They just posted this cryptic message on Twitter at 10:15am EST on 15-Nov-12

We're aware of a computer issues affecting some of our flights. We're working to resolve it. We'll update as we have more details.

According to FlyerTalk, this is affecting all United ops, NOT any CO planes and is the weight/blanace system. None of that = no take off.

Why does this seem to happen so often with UA? This makes me concerned as a flyer ... how old are their systems?

Via a poster on FlyerTalk: "Currently tarmacking at IAD on UA 229 to SAN. Captain says all traffic is stopped due to a "worldwide communications shutdown". Then he says "these seem to be happening a lot recently". Going back to gate if system not up in 15 minutes.:

No idea...I just checked in for my flight tonight with no issues...

I remember the last outage that was very UA-focused. Even had a long chat with me from my friend. And according to FT, this is the 4th computer outage for United alone this year. Even the captian of that flight that FTer is on, said is happens it a lot. That's unacceptable. Will it make me not book on UA? No, but it makes me think twice.

I'm sitting here in EWR waiting to board a flight to HNL. Nothing appears amiss on the surface. Spoke to a Cust Rep, she wasn't aware of any delays as a result of a computer glitch. I really hope its nothing substantial..getting stuck in EWR is not on my bucket list.

My partner who works in network operations at UA headquarters is saying that the Unimatic system is down which affects dispatch and load planning for S-UA flights. It does not seem that S-CO flights are affected but I could be wrong.

Something like that...

Unimatic being down could be problematic but it wont ground the company just slow things down as they have to figure things manually. It's an older system but its also generally very stable...

Take everything you read on FT with a huge grain of salt. There is an organized effort from a group of bitter customers to discredit anything and anyone to do with CO.

This is at least the 4th major outage affecting UA, according to media reports and apparently pilots on the planes currently

From the customer's perspective (read: everyone on any of the affected flights, including crew), it doesn't matter whose fault it was -- it's United's responsibility to make sure things work smoothly, including the verification of processes at their contractors to ensure that operations aren't affected. It may have been an HP screwup, but it's still a United failure.

No. All that has really occurred so far is elimination of the CO brand, a single operating certificate and the common use of SHARES. While the airline is (naturally) trying to present a homogenized image, it's still very much 2 separate operations. For example, the two airlines still operate the common aircraft types (like the 777) very differently.

2 and 1/2 years past the merger announcement and there's still a LONG way to go.

Yes....HPs data center went down. SHARES is managed and run by HP and while I agree with flashmeister that when it comes down to it the customer doesn't care or know that it's not UAs fault, but just as a point of info for you there was nothing that UA could have done to resolve or did to cause the issue. HP screwed up and not only affected UA but a few other business that are hosted at their data center on the East Coast. SHARES itself was working perfectly they simply could not access the program as a trunk line was cut leading into the data center.

As for Unimatic or any computer program going down...well that happens on occasion.

No, the airline used two separate operation systems. sCO uses FOMS which stands for Flight Ops Management System. sUA uses Unimatic which is more baggage/weight and balance oriented I think. Someone more familiar might be able to provide more insight, I'm more familiar with FOMS.

Correct, basically there was a Unimatic shutdown, not a FOMS one, so pmUA ops were more affected than pmCO ops. IAH, EWR and CLE ran ontime today for the most part. ORD, DEN and LAX flights from my city were drastically affected, ORD was 1 1/2 hrs late, DEN was 50 and 45 mins late and LAX was 2 hrs late, big, big problems with connections today. On top of that, all our flights were full, making rebooking a pain. They really need to get onto one operations system, this is getting harder and harder to explain to people, let alone customers. I didn't realize it was a Unimatic shutdown until about 7:30pm, long after the mass wave of delayed customers came through.

No they aren't...as it was pointed out by others sCO uses FOMS imbedded in SHARES while sUA uses Unimatic for load planning and dispatch...they say that Unimatic is to be the surviving system, but they have yet to convert any sCO flights to it...the 2 different systems also affects ULD tracking and dispatch as well as there are 2 different systems still in use for sUA and sCO, and neither one communicates with the other...
