The mighty Bird is spreading it wings down under!
Emirates plans to upgrade its Perth flights to an Airbus A380 service next year.
"Emirates Airline will fly the 489-seat A380s to Perth as soon as the WA airport completes a dedicated boarding bridge now being built," Emirates country manager Khalid Al Zarooni revealed today via Twitter.
Great news... Emirates have always indicated they will send the A380 to PER it was just a matter of when due to the airport operators having their heads in the sand...

EK are expanding in PER really fast, with 3 x 77W's daily early next year. I would not be surprised to see 2 or all of the daily services to become A380 especially with the QF codeshares they will pick up in May.

Tim Clark was reported as saying that EK would like to send the A380 to PER when he came over to Australia for the QF/EK launch but I am not so sure that the reason for EK not having previously deployed an A380 was simply the lack of a suitable gate. Having sufficient suitable aircraft would also been a reason - remember that it was necessary for them to take out of service many of their existing fleet and substitute 777s due to the wing crack issues.
They have only recently commenced a third service four times a week and this will increase to three times daily service from March next year. All of which is good news.
I suppose that increased desire to use the A380 might be influenced by the QF/EK tie-up. I am guessing that the EK420/ EK421 service would be the likely candidate for the upgauge.

Its clear PER need to get their arse into gear and build a NEW terminal & 3rd runway to handle the traffic... I've read in previous threads aircraft are sitting on idle for hours waiting for a vacant bay!

At peaks periods there is definitely a problem with delays and overcrowding but these mainly affect domestic travel. Some 40% of movements are lighter aircraft operating charter flights to mining communities and /or mine sites. PER is building a new regional terminal - Terminal WA - and is developing a new domestic terminal adjacent to the present International Terminal. Terminal WA should be up and running in the next few months while other developments should come on stream in 2014. Too little, too late, maybe. However, those issues are separate from the question of gates suitable for the A380.
The fact that EK has had no problem operating three flights to PER indicates that the lack of gates per se at the International Terminal is not a problem for EK. The time that the EK420/ EK421 service is on the ground in PER - up to five hours - suggests that there is no pressing need for the space that it is occupying. Same with EK424/ EK425 - on the ground about four and a half hours during which little is happening at the International Terminal. It is only the A380 that ideally requires gates with three jet-bridges but two as a minimum. It is expected that one A380 gate will be available from mid-2013 with a second being complete in 2014.

I'd expect BNE, and possibly even a second SYD flight before a second PER one.

Quoting EK413 (Reply 7): I believe EK414 / EK415 would eventually become an A380 considering EK418 / EK419 operate via BKK...
If QF were to pull out of SYD-BKK and rely on the EK codeshare then EK418/419 might make sense.
I'm not overly confident that the early flight would have the traffic to support an A380. Certainly in peak periods, but I've seen some flights where the loads on expertlyer have been straight 9s across every fare group in Y and with lots of seats left in F/J.

I think a A380 to BNE is not too far away, doubt SYD will get another A380 for a while as QF will be adding a A380 on that route. In the short term I can only see EK focusing on adding capacity into ADL/BNE/PER.

I never made those comments... The comments are from Reply 6...
I've noticed EK have a habit of establishing daily, double daily, triple daily prior to introducing an A380...

Really amazing. I remember being on the second ever flight by EK to PER in 2002 (?) and everybody was wondering back then if the route would be viable in the long run....

Indeed. The third flight will start in December and operate 5 x weekly, bringing the total weekly flights to 19. That third flight will become daily as of March next year.

I think initially, we will only see one of the three daily frequencies move to A380 services, with the other two remaining 77Ws for the time being. I would definitely agree, though, that knowing EK's penchant for expansion, it shouldn't be a surprise to see that some time in the future, PER will be served by three daily A380s ...

For the time being, one of the existing PER services, EK424/425 is still programmed with B77L, and while it is now and then upgauged to B77W, the service remains mainly operated with B77L and will continue to do so, because, with a 6 am PER departure, it has the less desirable schedule for the return sector.
