8th LH 744 Retired

22,5 year old D-ABVD has been wfu a few days ago and is the 8th of LHs original batch of Boeing 747-400s which has been retired. All of these old Jumbo-jets have been/are being ferried to Tupelo in the USA for immediate dismantling.
According to http://lh-taufnamen.de/lufthansa/ three more are to follow this winter, wall of which will be replaced one-by-one by new 748s. So by spring 2013 eleven 744s are gone from the fleet while seven 748s have joined.

It would be very nice if someone could provide the records of these birds, of which LH and Boeing can surely be proud of. Some of them have clocked the highest flight hour figures so far of all 744s built.

D-ABVD is currently at LH Technic in BRU for the removal of the interior, when finished it will be ferried from BRU to TUP where it will be scrapped.

Update - I have photos of ABTC, D, E and ABVB... so 4 of the 8 that have been retired/scrapped or soon to be scrapped

Hopefully! Or, it could be downgauged to an A330 or 340, likely depending on what the fleet needs are the time they are ready to get rid of that number of 744s. LH doesn't have enough 748i's on order to replace the entire 744 fleet.

Thats because not the whole 744 fleet is being retired, only the 1989-1992 built batch. The second batch built from 1996-2001 is here to stay until around 2020.

Correct, but the two following posters provided the reasons why:

Yes.

LH had 30 744s.

They have since received 10 A380s, and 4 B748s so far, so with 8 B744s retired, they're still up in terms of available aircraft.

Their 744s are being replaced by a mixture of A380s and B748s (and eventually A350s), over a very long time span.

Slightly off topic, but is LH going to upgrade the avionics of the newer 744s before they retire in 2020? I know there are several upgrade options for the 767/757s, but is there any option of new displays, CDU etc for the 747 family?

LH does it right with their a/c......they fly them all the way to the end of their economic life of over 100,000 hours. Contrast that with United that parked a number of 747-400's in the desert that are now being broken up and some of these had less than 50,000 hours. Please do not tell me these were leased birds and that makes a difference---the lease rates I am sure reflected the fact that United ditched perfectly good a/c at their economic half-life. We all pay as passengers for these kind of poor management mistakes.

You've got a good point there. Lufthansa seems to me at least to be very smart in their aircraft usage, and overall, a very well run operation. They certainly got their money's worth from these 744s.

Bad management was certainly part of it (maybe even the majority) but to be fair post 9/11 contraction of travel market was also a significant part of it.

Bad management was certainly part of it (maybe even the majority) but to be fair post 9/11 contraction of travel market was also a significant part of it.

I agree, the entire world's aviation industry suffered horrendously post 9-11! United was just one of many, and they rapidly parked their Heavy's 747's, 777's, and many types in their fleet. [Just in the first month alone, there were 100,000+ lay offs in the U.S. airline industry alone]. It took years to try to recover and I (IMHO) do not think it ever will truly repair to the previous ways. pmUnited has been plagued with many difficulities from then on, with their plummeting customer service reports and then with the bankrupcies etc... As you see, they are leaning away from the 747 from the other threads on a.net.

I grew up on that airline and will always have a love for them, but times change and I hope the merger starts working for them and pmCO!
