I was looking into VS website for my trip to LHR from DXB next January, I found that Virgin Atlantic changed the daily service to/from DXB to A333 instead of the A346.
Is this a downgrade due to the tough competition on the route. DXB is the second after JFK for flights from London.

Virgin Atlantic’s first Airbus A330 aircraft has now taken to the skies from Manchester to Orlando signaling the arrival of its new $2.2bn fleet of 10 planes. The new A330 aircraft will be delivered over the next two years enabling the long haul airline to take more passengers to key markets including US East Coast, East and West Africa, the Middle East and India.

Its maiden A330 aircraft, named 'Beauty Queen' will be Virgin Atlantic's first long range twin engined aircraft and is the most efficient aircraft in its class today. The new plane will use 15% less fuel per seat than the airline's A340-300 aircraft, delivering Virgin Atlantic’s commitment to flying a lower carbon fleet.

I suspect it will be a cost saving excercise, the 333 is far more economical to run than the 346 and the capacity is not that different.

Actually, the A330 has an upgraded product offering (seats and entertainment system), I actually would consider this as an upgrade (As long as it is the three class A330). Definitely makes me want to travel with them now.

It is the quiet time for UK-Dubai traffic. Previously in Jan/Feb we have seen the 340-300 used instead of the 340-600 so it is not unusual.

It goes back to a 346 after the winter.

Its been flying to MCO since April 2011. There are already 4 or 5 in service if not more. One was subleased to Ryan International before they filed CH. 11 in March 2012.

I'm aware of that I was simply quoting the press release with the link provided...

I've read in another thread and apparently the A333's which have been subleased are in the process of being returned to VS with one in the paint shop and the other aircraft to be returned shortly from CI...

Pretty sure all 10 have now been delivered, with 7 in service. G-VGEM and G-VUFO are in ZRH having cabin work and G-VLUV is in the final month or so of its lease to CI.

Technically, if we are speaking of downguages from the a340, ORD was the first city after JFK.
If we are talking service from London (I assume you mean LHR), YVR was second after JFK.

Actually DEL got the 330 before ORD.

YVR never saw the A333, except for one or two equipment substitutions.

JFK was first (from LHR), followed by DEL, then ORD, BOM, IAD and BOS.

As mentioned previously, DXB will revert to A346 for summer '13 and it was frequently an A343 in the winter anyway.

From LGW/MAN the leisure configured A333 serve MCO and LAS, and very occasionally BGI.

Arguably, in all but the number of engines, the A333 is an up gauge from an A343. More (and better) seats, better IFE, better economics.

So long 701, it was nice knowing you.

That's right but without a date to provide context, it appears they are just starting deliveries.

The only ones that have been regularly coming ot MCO are G-VKSS, VSXY and VINE

That's because they are the leisure aircraft that are based at LGW/MAN.

The rest are based at LHR, that's why you have not seen them.

From what I have read, the 3 leisure based ones will also be fitted into the LHR configuration and then will be rotated between LHR & LGW.
