QR To Fly 787 To PER From December

This was posted in the Australian Aviation thread, but I think it deserves its own thread!

QR's next 787 destination is PER, making it the first city in Australia with a scheduled 787 service.

Al Baker was speaking shortly after Qatar’s current single 787-8 began shakedown services between Doha and Dubai, prior to being transferred to the London route. He was quoted in Travel Daily as saying the airline would soon have four of the Dreamliners, out of 30 on order, in service.

This is very exciting news! It's great that PER gets a bit of glory nowadays, with EK announcing A380 services from 2013 also.

At the moment, QR are operating 3x 777-300ERs weekly, so I'd imagine that the 787-8 would complement, rather than replace the 777s given that they're significantly smaller.

Nevertheless, I can't wait to see the 787 here in the flesh

Well 77W has 42J293Y, the 77L has 42J217Y and the 787 has 22J232Y

So with 3 weekly 77L/77W there are 126J and 651-879Y per week.

With daily 787 there are 154J and 1624Y per week.

So minor business class increases (but more options) and a large increase in Y capacity.

So, I don't think they will complement but replace, and that one day, as PER grows further, it may go back to 77W (or A350 if its that far down the line), or possibly second daily 787. I think a bit of that will be reliant on J-class loads in respect to Y-class loads.

Does anyone know how J-class is doing specifically? As the new service doesn't really give much better J-class numbers.

LHR might be a destination for QR to show off it's new toy, but as stated the 77W is a better airplane for such a high-capacity route. Look for the 787s to go to more places like PER. Personally I'd like to see them on the long-legged routes to the USA, like DFW, ORD, or the West Coast. They'll probably end up doing a few secondary Asian destinations also.
