PER To Have Third Runway In Five Years

Following a meeting between the Western Australian Treasurer and Transport Minister, Troy Buswell and Brad Geatches, the CEO of Perth Airport it has been announced that PER could have a third runway operational by late 2017.

Under the 2009 Master Plan a third - and second parallel - runway was seen as not being necessary until 2029. However, fueled by a mining boom and increasing population, passenger numbers have increased by 40% over the last few years with a similar increase in aircraft movements.

Brad Geatches has stated, "Perth Airport is proceeding on a path of design and consultation that would, subject to agreements and approvals, see the third runway delivered by the end of 2017, at the earliest."

In the meantime the airport will conduct preliminary negotiations on the project with airlines by April. Then there will be the usual planning and environmental approvals, which will take up to two years. If there are no hold-ups, construction should start in 2015.

About thirty years ago Grogan Road was closed on the grounds that the land was needed for a new runway. You can't rush these things.

The report did not assess terminal and taxiway capacity.

Airservices intends to use the recommendations to work collaboratively with the airport operator Perth Airport Pty Ltd and airlines to realise improvements over the next two years as part of its airport capacity enhancement program.

Ah, election time again so the transport minister is out pledging projects that will never happen..

I think that I have more chance of having a third testicle operational by 2017

I will be surprised if PER has its third runway before both BNE and MEL (both due approx 2020).
The latter two seem to be the only proactive major airports in the country and look to build/expand to match their growth while SYD and PER get set back with infrastucture reaching capacity.

That would still make it more likely than the new Sydney airport.

I am sure Westralia Airports could utilise that land much better as a shopping centre or distribution hub, would be a damn shame to actually use it for airport infrastructure.

They are only just bringing the airport up to where it should have been a few years ago so by the time all of the new terminal construction is complete it will be at capacity. There is no foresight, never has been.

Unbelievable, once again Westralia Airports and Geatches are dragged kicking and screaming to a point where they will provide only enough infrastructure for the immediate future and completely ignore long term investment...
