Does anybody have any idea why DL cut back service in ORF this fall and if they have any plans to re-start service in the spring? They eliminated CVG service, which doesn't surprise me given the light loads and the new LGA service that started in Summer. I was very surprised that they eliminated MSP service though. They had just increased the MSP service from 1x day to 2x day (CRJ9 and E170) and it seemed like they were always pretty full when they cut them completely. They also cut the early morning DTW flight, but upgraded the noon flight to DTW from a CRJ2 to a DC-9. All the ATL service is great but it doesn't do me much good getting up to the midwest.

There are numerous capacity cuts systemwide during the winter months. The changes are most noticable in the Jan & Feb schedules where demand is at its lowest point of the year. Many of these flights return in the spring.
Some cases frequency and equipment will vary by day of the week.
MSP-ORF was dropped for the winter months, but will likely return in the spring. DL is flying MSP-RIC year-round.

You'll see a lot of jockying of schedules and aircraft types as the B717's and B737-900's start to come on line later in the summer. They have been pretty quiet about it with just a general comment that the 717's will been seen a lot in DTW. January and February are slow months and they try to get a lot of maintenance done then, too.

ORF is a much more seasonal market than RIC is. Demand falls off a cliff once it gets cold and VA Beach all but shuts down until March-April. The "Seven Cities" area is fairly small anyway and they have the option of flying out of both ORF and PHF depending on where you live and what the fares look like. Many will drive to either/or chasing a better deal.

Who knows, maybe if PEOPLExpress ever gets off the ground in PHF it will spur additional competition...

20-30 years ago, ORF was the much bigger market and now ORF and RIC are essentially the same size at 3.2 and 3.1 million pax/year. The Navy has shrunk and Richmond has grown. As suspected, RIC has better yields 24.14 cents over 903 mi. compared to 20.1 over 1054 mi. for ORF. I find that interesting.
