Lion Air Considering A320neo Order

As has been rumored and speculated for a while now, AviationWeek is reporting the carrier may be poised to place an order for the NEO:

"Indonesia’s Lion Air, the world’s largest customer for Boeing 737-900ERs, may be about to place an order for Airbus aircraft.

Sources close to the airline tell Aviation Week that President Director Rusdi Kirana is considering Airbus's new engine option for its A320 family of narrowbodies. It is unclear, however, which NEO variant he would order, or how many. Lion Air officials were unavailable for comment.

If Rusdi decides to purchase Airbus narrowbodies, it will be a major coup for the European manufacturer, although vindication for a sales campaign to win over Lion, one of Boeing’s largest customers. According to Boeing's website, Lion's backlog consists of 201 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, 123 737-900ERs, nine 737-800s and five 787-8s."

The rumour has been kicking around for a while. It should also be noted that it's assumed these planes would not be operated directly by Lion themsleves, but by "Malindo Airways" a Malaysian-based rival for AirAsia.

If there is a willing a financier (Ex-Im Bank in the US and it's European counterpart), there will be a willing a buyer. Seriously, why not buy every plane that can be financed and see what happens? If the model works, they make a ton. If it fails, the lenders take back the planes. What's the downside?

The speculation has been for 100 NEO's.
If also the speculation for another 100 from Air Asia materializes the NEO will have another awesome year.

Yep, as noted. It seems increasingly likely such an order is coming to fruition though

Which is a phenomenal number. Not even 10-15 years ago such numbers would have been virtually impossible. But first these rumors must materialize in real orders before this number can be achieved.

I believe AirAsia are seeing better than projected growth, so they need planes sooner than they can get more neos. I think their 100 top-up when it comes will be a mix, but possibly as much as 2/3 ceos and 1/3 noes.

Correct. It should also be noted this is not a firm decision, yet. Lion already has some 200 B-737-9MAXs on firm order and Air Asia has some 200 A-320NEOs on order.

I agree. Even if one or both orders become firm, I question if these two (3?) carriers alone will ever take that many airplanes over the next 8-10 years.
