LAS hasn't gotten much attention lately, but it has long been a star of the Southwest network. It has been a top ten station for many years (and at the top until fairly recently) and was launched 1/31/82 with five daily flights (SAN and PHX also became WN cities the same day). The longest flight in the route network is also out of Vegas to Providence, although that appears to be gone this summer. There was an interesting article on Monday in Vegas Inc. some of you may enjoy:

Southwest steadily has grown capacity to and from McCarran during the past year by increasing the number of seats on its planes while reducing the number of flights to the market. In October 2011, Southwest offered 1,497 flights a week; now, it offers 1,483. It flies 212,185 seats into the market each week, compared with 204,094 a year ago.

Southwest is able to increase capacity with fewer flights because it is retrofitting its cabins with new seats

Southwest indicated it plans to use the larger jets on long-haul routes through Las Vegas.

I have noticed 738's on a lot of the longer routes such as FLL, PIT, TPA, and MCO. MDW and DEN also seem to see LAS rotations on the -800's.

Here's a run down of next summers schedule out of LAS on weekdays. Quite a few 1x daily to east coast destinations:

Agree that the new seating is a major mistake by SWA---as a 40 year customer I am apalled. It is not the leg room that is the problem---that is less but if you take our the magazines in the seat in front of you it is ok. The problem is the seats are uncomfortable and too narrow---it is as if they made the aisles bigger at the expense of the passengers. I can only say that SWA did not think this one through and it grieves me to say that as SWA has long been my favorite airline.

But did they? I have flown on it and while I know there is a difference in legroom but is there a difference in width? I feel more comfortable and I am not a short man.

Its not even that they are doing less then competition, they are just going to standard. People are complaining about these seats, I find them more comfortable, It depends on the person. One very noticeable thing in general is SWA passengers do not like change, for the better or worse.

Oh brother, I have nothing against WN, but you obviously have trouble handling data and taking it personally. This shows WN passengers at LAS are at 16MM, same as 2007, when they ran about a 10 point lower systemwide LF, which would lead me to believe there was a lot more capacity in LAS in 2007. Also because I saw the OAG stats the other day and they are a bit down . It's not a bad thing--they're transporting the same or more pax more efficiently.

Correct on the first two points, but I wonder whether LAS has a higher l/f than the system. It would not surprise me to learn that it does, but I don't know for sure one way or the other.

Plenty of connections beyond LAS, and state government travel to Carson City help out quite a bit.

Sorry you find the seats uncomfortable but they are, in fact, not any narrower than the previous versions. They are actually the same exact seat frames with different cushioning and seat covers, the actual dimensions are no different than they were previously.

My apologies on missing ONT - I remember reading it but for some reason I didn't get it typed out with the rest of the list. With LAX, SNA, ONT, and BUR that comes out to 36x just to the L.A. basin. Another 12x to SAN, 8x SMF, and a total of 25x to SJC/SFO/BUR comes out to 81 daily flights between California and Vegas on Southwest alone.  Wow!

Also worth noting: LAX 8x DL (mix of mainline/connection), 5x AA (all mainline), 5x UA (1x mainline 4x connection), 2x NK, 4x B6 LGB-LAS, and 1x SNA-LAS on FL. This brings LAS to the L.A. basin to 61 daily, mostly on mainline.

With the following added in, LAS - California comes out to be 137 daily flights (give or take slightly based on G4 only serving some cities less than weekly):

FAT 4x OO 4x weekly G4
PSP 3x OO
MTY 3x weekly G4
SMX 4x weekly G4
SCK 13x weekly G4
SAN 2x NK
OAK 2x NK
SFO 7x VX, 10x UA (almost all mainline)
MCE 1x Great Lakes

I am not someone who complains and am one of SWA's oldest customers----I took my first flight on them in July of 1971 from Dallas Love to Houston Hobby and I defend SWA all the time as all the posts I do show. It may just be me on this one and again I am not complaining about the leg room but how the seat feels.......maybe I am someone who just hates change on SWA and I admit to that. If other folks find the new seats comfortable then the problem is mine!! I will always love SWA!!

Oh no you're welcome to find them less comfortable! I think many others do as well, and many people like them. I know you sit lower in the seat itself which means the armrests would be higher up on your frame which you might perceive as "tighter".... I'm very short so I find them more comfortable and they don't force my head forward. I can actually sleep on deadheads!!! I just wanted you to know that they were the same frames. You know, with aircraft and seats, there isn't much you can change with a lot of the side-to-side dimensions... not legroom is another story ; )

Its linking the two largest cities within the same state and the drive time is extremely far. No Interstate between the two cities. Also remember the capital is basically in Reno so lots of traffic to the largest city in the state. Also no train service or really other real option for travellers.

it still kind of surprises me there isnt some sort of interstate from Las Vegas Northwestard to Reno and beyond. That is about 500 miles of nothingness on a two lane road. That would have to be one brutal drive.

Starting next year thru 2015 LAS airport has plans to tear down the old international terminal and the A & B gates rotundarotundas and build a new terminal 1 with 40 gates and additional international gates.
Rumor was WN will take 30 of the new gates when finished.
