D-ABYE is being retained at Boeing for further tests, probably connected with the activation of the tank in the tail.
It will be delivered in 2015.
Next year 5 more are to join the fleet.

Quoting Heavierthanair (Reply 9): How come they need in excess of two years to test / certify something that has been there from the beginning?
Part of that time will relate to testing but modifying the airplane from flight test configuration back to the customer configuration will take up a lot of time.
Except for the first 747 (RA001), 767 (VA001) and 757 (NA001) all the airplanes Boeing has used in flight test have gone eventually to the airlines. The first 777 (WA001) is owned by CAT.

OK 747-8i, I think everyone understood I didn't talk about 747-100, 200, 300, 400 when I said 747-800I, it was very close to 747-8i, isn't it?

It has been said above: D-ABYA, D-ABYC, D-ABYD and D-ABYF (which I flew today, brandnew).
D-ABYB has been skipped due to the accident with that registration back then. And D-ABYE will be joining later as Boeing wants to keep that airplane a little longer.
IAD, BLR, DEL are served at the moment with the 748i, LAX will start December 10th and the next destination is known as well, but I cannot tell.
ORD will follow in 2013 as well and some others are in the pipeline as well...

It's 747-8i and not 747-800I
Not exactly, Boeing use 747-8i for marketing, but the lufthansa 747 is an 830 according to the FAA. Same thing for the freighters. Atlas's are 87uf.
The FAA type certificate data sheet uses 747-8 and 747-8F generically for the passenger and cargo models, but when referring to individual aircraft for exceptions etc. they use the Boeing customer codes, e.g. 747-830 (LH), 747-8KB (Qatar Amiri Flight) etc.

Quoting bmacleod (Reply 13): Any future for the 748i for FRA-YYZ?
Unlikely right now with AC codesharing 77Ws on this route....
I asked the same question, I doubt LH would put the 747-8 on the YYZ rotation, although I heard there is a chance of a few flights during the summer. AC would have to downgage their AC872 flight to a 763s or A333s but AC is making too much $ filling the 77Ws belly with cargo to FRA.

How is the 748i actually doing? Is LH satisfied with the new jumbo so far, especially in comparison to the A380 and the 744. And how do the pax like it?

My sources all say the 748I is doing great, LH and pax being very happy with it. I havent heard the slightest negative comment, and my LH connections are good enough they wouldnt hide such from me if there are any issues.

I keep hearing the rumour once a few more 748i's get into the fleet, YYZ will see it occasionally as a marketing/publicity push but not a regular scheduled route.
The LH 748i is also very premium heavy and I am not sure there is enough front traffic to take the additional First and Business seats. The flight is profit share not just codeshare so it doesn't matter what metal the passenger flies for AC or LH profit. However, the cargo isn't profit share so as pointed out above, AC likes the cargo that fills the 77W belly. The route is very cargo profitable. Now should cargo be added to profit share there could be more movement back and forth and onto the LH MD11F.

He was just trying to be helpful--and in a nice way. It's always good to use correct terminology even though the meaning may be clear without it. I don't think it was meant as a personal attack.

Glad it's on it's way. Will ORD continue as a mix of 748s and & 744s for some years, or is it expected to become 748I exclusively?

The 748 get a new version: 8/80/298. That means not really heavy premium than others. The 744 has 8/80/242 (or 234) and during winter 8/66/270. And all LH long haul aircrafts which contain a first class have 8 seats.

Well, things change quite often, so who knows what happens. My personal opinion is that it will be a mix of 748 and an Airbus. I am not sure if you really need 2 748's to ORD. But that's my personal opinion.

LH recently switched their 346 to a 744 on their FRA-DEN route for this summer.
Since this change was pretty recent, I guess that DEN isn't going to be seeing the 748i this year, even though the airport management has prepared for it.

Maybe next summer?
(oh well........)
I was thinking about the same thing, now some here say 748 is premium heavy and some its not, what is the structure of this route, is it also premium heavy? I guess this will determine whether DEN will see a 748 in near future or further down the road.
I am sure LH is considering MEX as well, especially as MEX-FRA is sometimes pretty difficult to do in the 744. I mean the elevation of MEX is pretty high and maybe the 748 performs better out of this high elevation airport.
I've noticed LH418 has been running late lately, except for yesterday when it was spot-on. It's running two hours behind today and just entered US airspace. What's up with the LH's on-time departure record on this route, anyone?

Weather in FRA. Snow and rain and wind... And then chaos in FRA. And as there are no spare 748's which can be used, they run a little late.

Ooh yikes! I guess I visited Germany right on time and left before the snowfall! UA 903 though has been on time all week so maybe snow isn't as bad in MUC.

Wilco,
is the Delhi route 100% 748I now, or the odd 744 still flying on that route sometimes?
AFAIK it is daily at the moment. Every once in a while I see a 744 to IAD in the booking system.
BLR will be reduced when the next 748i destination arrives as for that new destination you need 2 frames. And once the next 748i comes, BLR goes back to daily 748i.
