What Ever Happened To Baltia?

A few years ago, a new airline emerged, saying it was going to start flying between JFK and St. Peterburg using an ex-NW 747-200. They even had the plane painted and their website is still operational. So, what happened? Awaiting government approval? I doubt that would take this long.

Maybe somebody can help me out!

They have been trying since 1989!

Anyhow, you can check out their SEC filings online. Symbol is BLTA.
But in essence per Q3 filling, they say they are in advanced stage of FAA certification and have begun crew training with Kalitta Air.

In addition to JFK-St. Petersburg route, they are also looking at serving Latvia, Ukraine, and Belarus.

Oh btw, their stock was up a whopping 33% today !

Thanks for the responses! I look forward to seeing this airline takeoff (if it does) for a number of reasons:

1. I'm interested in seeing how their routes work.
2. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE more 747 classics flying passenger routes to/from the USA.

So they took 23 years to get to the advance stage of FAA certification? This is like an entire generation ago

This same JFK-LED market was served by SU around the same time this airline was being conceived. Since then SU dropped the route. Do you think they dropped it because it wasn't feasable or they got scared of competition from Baltia? And SU was the world's largest airline back in the 1980s.

Let's think this through logically. Today's trading volume was 223,972 shares. Priced at about 2 cents per share we're talking about less than $4,500 for the entire day. Taking B6 stock as a comparison, today's volume was 2,686,724 shares at about $5.14 per share means that almost $14 billion was involved. So when we're talking about $4,500 a day, there's not much you can finance when you're talking about an airline with a fleet of B742s flying from North America to Europe.

So even if they ever do get off the ground, what good will these routes provide? An entire population of Latvia is about 2 million people. Unless they set up a hub in RIX or partner with BT for code sharing this simply won't work as O&D traffic. JFK-RIX is already served direct by HY which had to cut down from twice a week to once a week and the service continues from TAS, where the bulk of JFK passengers go to and from. Ukraine is already serviced by 2 direct flights a day, VV and DL with KBP. Is there a demand for more? Maybe to a different city like Odessa? Who knows. And serving Belarus is almost as bad as setting up direct service between JFK and HAV. Both governments give each other's citizens a hard time to obtain travel documents between USA and Belarus.

I don't want to sound pessimistic but it looks like Baltia will just be another airline that will never leave the ground.

IMO it's a typical penny-stock scam. Develop a slick website, sink a few bucks into marketing to lure in unsuspecting small-ticket investors and move large volumes of shares to effect big swings in the share price. It's just been a bit more long-lived than your garden variety pump-and-dump.

Anyone who thinks that concept is viable in 2012 needs to have their head examined.

Even investing in considerably more viable airlines is generally a bad idea. Investing in Baltia is something else entirely.

Speaking of the devil, the DOT today asked Baltia for an update on its launch efforts.

According to DOT, in consultation with the FAA, they are under the impression the carrier is not making sufficient progress in obtaining the required FAA part-121 authority. More specifically they understand there has been no FAA action since October 22, 2012, while Baltia SEC filings show the air carrier's cash accounts have significantly decreased.

Baltia has 30-days to address the departments concerns otherwise risk revocation of the company's certificate of authority for reason of dormancy.

I did a little search. Baltia has acquired two 747 in the past,
N705BL ex-PIA AP-AYW acquired NOV 2009; stored at KUL and scrapped early 2012 after acquiring their second 747 N706BL ex NWA N623US; acquired DEC 2010; currently stored at OSC; arrived sept 10, 2010 in full Baltia c/s; I haven't found any sign it might be scrapped. Whether it will actually fly again is another question.

I think that the whole Baltia case is one big and expensive joke. They have been trying to get going for the last 23 years and still no go. I think most of the pax from St. Petersburg will take the plane/train to HEL and continue from there when heading to JFK or West Coast.

I Agree...but the question is on who? Its obviously not a get rich quick scandal....whoever is behind it is extremely optimistic or stubborn...23 years...wow that's persistent.

Given the cost of fuel and the availability of spares for the B747-200, out of production since 1989, it is hard to see this as a runner. Even early B747-400's are being scrapped now, (e.g. AF/LH).

Interested to know the hours and cycles of these aircraft as well, NW DC10's for example were retired with huge numbers of hours, (about 120,000).

This airline is not real. Read written reports, stories, and other forums online. This airline is a front for the owners to scam willing investors out of money. Look at the insider trading activity, which is required to be public knowledge by the SEC. Anytime the stock ticks up the slightest bit, the insiders dump a large amount of shares. Baltia will never ever ever see the light of day. The FAA needs to revoke their license and stop this pump and dump scam now!

Perfect analysis Cush, actually the whole Baltia business is not a joke, there has never been any intention to set up an airline.

Once upon a time I worked with this airline to help them get airborne. It was their second attempt. We were successful in obtaining a 747-200 from CX with the option for others. The aircraft was fresh out of a "D" check and almost ready to go. The problem then as is apparently now, the lack of sufficient money to get to the finish line. They had an IPO in the works and it never happened -- again. The other problem is that Igor Demitrowsky (the founder) has some unusual ideas of marketing the product which people chuckle about and don't understand. Having said that, people need to know he is catering to his key customer, wealthy Russians and other ethnic groups in the former USSR.

To get an idea of how his service would look, take a look at this picture from a Transaero 747. That is an example of what Igor's vision would create if they had sufficient funding. He means well and I wish him and Baltia well.
