The 747 Is Back In DEN.

In a few weeks I will be flying LH to DEN. Usually I return to DEN via LHR on BA. To my pleasant surprise, I will be on a 747. How long has the 747 been on this route?

Europe to DEN traffic must be pretty good, with FI, LH, and BA flying to Europe, and LH is with the 747. I recall DEN last had the 747 with UA on some domestic routes years back.

The 747 has been an infrequent visitor to DEN. Now it's daily. Way to go LH and the Star Alliance.

LH uses the 747 into Denver every winter. The rest of the year the A346 is used.

Here's to hoping that someone will step up and document the BA 747 presence at DEN. Such opportunities keep slipping away as people talk about it, click off a few photos and then are amazed a few years down the road when no moving imagery or video of exist (in the 21st Century of all things).

One person did do a decent job of snagging the LH 747 (it's the only one on youtube), I got the A346 (but DEN is also a flyover airport from LAX).

So put those iPhones and 'Droids to work if you don't have a camera, someone somewhere will be glad you took the advantage of a rare opportunity!

Already done!

Not the best shot or view but I was in DEN for work last week and happened upon the LH 744

It switches to a 744 every winter, then goes back to the A346 for summer. However, the schedules are showing a 744 throughout this coming summer. I realize that it's too early to know for sure, but it would be great to have a year-round 744 again.

BA currently operate 777 (I was on it last week) and judging by the photos in the search engine haven't operated 747 to DEN for 8-10 years. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Pretty sure 2000 was when BA stopped operating the 747 to DEN, just before LH started service in March 2001.

Was it you that shot the similar (or exact 747) video at DEN? I sent a compliment to the vid-shooter for taking the moment to do it. I just find it so odd that there are A.netters covering the globe and yet such minimal to no existent documentation for retro-archival visits when these views will no longer exist. If that was you..again, great job!

I have no idea the OP is making the claim that the 747 is being brought in. I wouldn't be surprised..BA is sending to unusual destinations such as the scheduled DMO service.

While I do shoot videos myself, I didn't this time around so can't take the credit for the video shoot, but I did take the photo I had posted.

I was so used to seeing the A340 in DEN I was equally shocked to see the 747 in DEN and knew that it was somewhat rare to have that in DEN.

I saw a LH 744 in DEN way back in early-August 2011, so my question is basically how did I see that? Was it a 744 all-year in 2011?

I didn't realize it had been that long, but it does appear that the last picture of a BA 744 at DEN in the database is from September, 2000.

2011 was a little weird, between September 2010 and August 2012, I was at DEN between 3pm and 6pm, everyday, 6 days a week because of my job. So I have watched a glorious 744 touching down one day and a 346 the next day, this happened quite a few times but as far as I know it was not 744 year around.

744 is not year round, but at times of high demand they switch on relative short notice or longer in advance if the booking status needs it.
Rumours say that during summer 2012 the mighty 744 will fly to DEN. So I guess there is some demand on that route.

UA screwed themselves a bit, they didn't establish a solid international feed, preferring to point all of their international traffic to SFO. BA snaked the traffic from the airport - despite not having any huge partner relationships to leverage here. When UA tried to re-establish with a 777 a few years ago, they didn't get traction. I have no idea how the Iceland air flight is doing. LH has always done.

I think that's part of the reason UA has been so aggressive with the 787 from DEN to NRT.

The loads on UA's DEN-LHR were great. The revenue was not.

If UA had an almost all economy configuration with small business class it would have worked, but when UA international configurations were all premium heavy and 3-class, the route could not be supported.

Would not be surprised if UA tries DEN-LHR again with the 787.

Yeah, that's a pretty safe bet. I'm planning on having my first 787 flight in April with the DEN-NRT route, and I'm hopeful that this starts making a dent for international travel. I have started to despise transiting via LAX to BKK.

The rumor I heard was that the 747-8 was going to make its rounds in DEN next summer. But don't quite me on that because this came from a guy I know that did contract MX work for LH here in DEN.

There are plenty of us photographers active out at DEN. Most of us no longer post photos online.

Well, I guess all LH stations have that rumour that the -8 is coming to their airport as LH is checking them all if it makes sense.
From what I heard DEN is not really on their whish list for now. Maybe once we have more -8's than -400's.
