Saw The First EMB-120 In DEN.

When I flew to SNA on Saturday, I saw a Great Lakes Airlines EMB-120 Brasilia parked in the United Express gates next to all the Great Lakes Airlines Beechcraft 1900s.

I understand that DEN used to recieve EMB-120 over 4 years ago. However, I saw my first EMB-120 in DEN.

When did they begin bringing them to DEN? The only props that I've seen were Air Wisconsin Dornier 328 (there are plenty of them), Great Lakes Airlines Beechcraft 1900s (plenty of them too), and a few Big Sky Airlines Fairchild Merlins.

Also, I saw a picture of a Dash 9 in United Express colors in DEN that was taken when the airport opened. I have never seen a Dash 9 in DEN....

Funny Great Lakes do not fly into SNA, and there are no scheduled flights in/out of SNA with any 1900's. Maybe your pilot got lost?
Skywest however fly the EMB-120 into SNA from LAX, maybe that is what you sa.

I just came back from my trip, and it was pretty bumpy over DEN, so it might have shaken my brains a bit too much, maybe thats why I'm not thinking well.....

I saw the Great Lakes Airlines EMB-120 in DEN, not SNA. I was flying TO SNA, when I saw the EMB-120s in DEN.

It was great. The airport is pretty nice, and the "Space Shuttle" take-off was pretty fun, although not exactly safe.

Great Lakes is no longer a United Express carrier, and has due to this reworked their schedules to include the EMB-120 in DEN operations.

Oh I know they are no longer a United Express carrier, I was just shocked that I saw an EMB-120 at DEN though.

Does anyone know where they fly them to? Did United prohibit them from bringing them to DEN when they were a United Express partner?

Will United kick them out of Concourse B now?  Big grin

They are safe...dont worry. If they wernt the FAA would have busted SNA's ass a long time ago.

I spoke to a pilot about the SNA take-offs, and he said they really aren't very safe, even though they are still done. They aren't dangerous, but they are a bit risky. Luckily nothing has happened, but it puts major stress on the aircrafts body.

Its not as safe as everyone says, its a good thing pilots don't mention tell the passengers that it isn't an extremely safe procedure, or else everyone would panic.

SNA take off's are safe. All planes that fly into and out of SNA are operating well within their restrictions for that airport and situations.

When a plane takes off out of SNA, due to the short runway, the first thing that is done is the break is held on while the engines throttle up. There is a spool time on the engine, as the power is not instantanious...it takes time to get the engine to 100% power. At most airports with long runways there is enough room so that the pilots dont have to hold the breaks, inorder to skip that spool time.

Next, the aircraft will rotate at no more than 5 degrees just like at anyother airport. As it builds speed, the aircraft can begin climbing at a steeper angle. The aircraft (esp. the 757) can climb very very steep, but there is a passenger comfort issue, so what you see at SNA is on the steeper end of that pax comfort thing.

When the plane has to throttle back as it aproaches Newport Beach, the pilots push the nose down to level the plane out. This avoids the aircraft from stalling. If that is done properly, there is no danger with the SNA take off.

In addition, all commercial planes are built to handle short field take off's as well as operating in all sorts of conditions. Operating in SNA is not the same as operating in LAX, DEN, SFO, DFW and so on. There are more airport restrictions in SNA, but the plane is built for it. Trust me, flying out of SNA can be done well within the planes operating standards. If a plane can not operate out of there, then it wont fly in there.

Exactly, IF done properly. What makes you think it will always be done properly?

No matter what, there is always a risk, therefore less safe than a normal take-off.

Try taking off out of SFO on 28R. There is a big mountain north of the runway. Try taking off out of SAN, same thing. Try departing out of BOS, there is a harbor.

At SNA, the plane throtles back, and pitches foward earlier than at other airports...that is all. When a plane leaves out of your beloved Denver, it climbs then the power is reduced, and the plane is pitched foward...just like at SNA, but not to the same extremes. According to your logic, it is not safe to even take off.  Insane
