In this thread Doha - Airport Opening, Delayed Again. (by smi0006 Aug 31 2012 in Civil Aviation) it was mentioned that mid-December parts of the operations would be opened at the new Doha International Airport, among them the VIP terminal, cargo, and the QR maintenance operations.
Is that still the case? If it is, I assume that infrastructure like runways and tower must be operational as well (otherwise how are cargo and VIP planes going to take off and land there?)
I am aware that the new airport is very close to the current one - you can actually see it - but I would assume they still will be operated as two separate airports, no?

opening date was 12/12/12 so I don´t think they will be able to do, and I think they think we discuss about the new opening date will be delayed by 3 to 6 months.
As you said they will open parts of the terminal, actually the ones that don´t require much testing and where the mess can be much less if something fails....

I don´t think so, but i think they will only operate in the new one and they will close progressively the old one.

"Akbar Al Baker, CEO of Qatar Airways, has stated categorically that the issues which have led to the ongoing delays at Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt Airport will not be repeated at Doha International Airport, despite the new facility missing its anticipated opening date this month."

Oh snap!
I'm flying in on March 6 and out again three days later and was really hoping to experience the new airport!
I don't really understand how the airport can handle more than 20 million passengers in its current state and layout. They need to get it opened as soon as possible!

Even more important the new DOH needs that 2nd runway to rationalize the hubbing into EK-like banks. IMHO required to fill the A380s. Note: I think QR is ready for the A380, I just think their connection times need adjustment to optimize RASM.

Is that an airport or a shopping mall?!? 90% of that article was on the retail opportunities. Ok, I accept there is profit there as LHR, DXB, and SIN have shown. But I'd like to read a bit of new stuff on the airside operations. I'm apparently not the target market of that article.
Retail space seems to be the name of the game nowadays. At least the middle east airports actually offer duty free deals...LHR is crazy expensive to shop at...even for a sandwich.

The only thing holding the airport up is the business and first class lounge, everything else is pretty much ready. Just like the current airport it is going to be separate from the facilities for economy and non QR pax, I am told that it is going to be the best in the world, I wouldn't doubt it.

Yes. The moodie report is all about retail and duty free news.
