Lufthansa announced a surprise move today with the opening of BER-AMS. This route may prove a strategic move to expand BER's North American connections on LH - in addition DUS, MUC & FRA - leading to ultimately direct BER-USA flights once Brandenburg is opened and traffic has grown sufficiently. Ofcourse the ever growing O&D traffic will be the main driver.

LH has tried this route in the past, and it failed. Don't see why it will be a succes this time (moreover a s the train and car are good alternatives).

However, this is a backtrack and unless fares are good I don't see many transfer at TXL. Moreover, UA will probably want this traffic going directly on their flights as they don't offer anything ex TXl which they don't ex AMS.

I guess Factsonly meant that LH can now offer TXL-AMS-IAD as an alternative to TXL-FRA-IAD. So no backtracking here.
As LH and UA are metal-neutral accross the Atlantic, this can be attractive for LH+UA. Especially when the additional passengers would enable UA/LH to upgauge the 757s from AMS to 767s.
This practice is already common for LH bookings from HAM. For example, I did a random search on lufthansa.com HAM-IAH, and the cheapest option turned out to be HAM-AMS-IAH.
