National Airlines (USA) Plans DXB-Afghanistan

National Airlines has filed with the US DOT for authority to engage in scheduled passenger operations from the US via Dubai to Afghanistan.

National states for the last year it has successfully operated 757 charter flights on near daily basis from Dubai to points in Afghnaistan on behalf of the US government, NGO's and private companies and now seeks to convert this to a scheduled operation.

As part of the expansion, National also seeks approval to enter into a codeshare agreement with either a US or foreign carrier on the route between Washington IAD and Dubai to feed its planned 757 beyond service.

National initially states it will plans to operate a 5 x weekly routing consisting of Dubai - Kabul - Bagram - Kandahar effective March 2013.

Carrier also states it is in the process of acquiring a 2nd passenger 757 to assist with this scheduled flying.

Can they just set up shop in DXB like that? I would imagine charter work is one thing...but wouldn't they need some sort of 5th freedom rights via DXB?

They would probably need that indeed...but this is what confused me here:

FROM the US to Afghanistan.....how would National get to DXB ?

They don't need anything from the UAE since it's an Open Skies market with unlimited 5th freedom rights at beyond or intermediate points. They of course also need such rights from the 3rd country involved, in this case Afghanistan.

If not DXB, then KWI. I flew from KWI on a Griffon Airways DC-9 twice into Kandahar. KWI is NEVER busy, especially compared to DXB. There is at least one other airline in addition to Griffon that flies out of DXB to points in Afghanistan, but I forgot it's name.

No connection whatoever, unless someone knows differently.

Like the original Braniff and Pan Am, there is only one National Airlines - 1934 to 1980!

UAE is an extremely liberal place for airlines to do business, especially a US airline that shares broad open-skies rights.

Yes I wonder who they will hook up with. Obviously whomever gives them the best rates and space to allow them to sell US-Afghanistan itineraries

Nothing to do with that National.

This National has been in business for almost 30-years, and was a merger between National Air Cargo and Murray Air.

Those are combi's, I don't know what's going on with those.

On their website is has a note that they are awaiting government approval for the 757 Combi

Several carriers were looking to get that combi business from ATI, and modified or planned to modify 757s in order to get it. I think North American was trying to get it as well. Now ATI is collecting the game pieces created by others.

National is basically the successor to Murray Air, which used to move around auto parts in DC8s. The current National is actually doing a good deal of military business, and some very specialized military business.
