Hawaiian Airlines announced today that they will offer twice daily LAX-OGG service for 10 weeks, during the peak summer travel season, starting in June of 2013.
The first daily flight will be offered June 13 through August 25, 2013, with Flight HA 33 departing Los Angeles International Airport daily at 10:00 a.m. and arriving at Maui's Kahului Airport at 12:25 p.m. The return Flight HA 34 departs Maui daily at 1:55 p.m. and arrives in Los Angeles at 10:05 p.m.
Hawaiian's second daily flight will be offered from June 20 through August 14, 2013, with Flight HA 55 departing Los Angeles at 1:30 p.m. and arriving on Maui at 3:55 p.m. The return Flight HA 56 will depart Maui at 10:00 p.m. and arrive in Los Angeles the following morning at 6:10 a.m.
I could be wrong but I believe this will be the first time HA has offered scheduled service from any of its west coast gateways to the islands during the early afternoon hours. Flight 55 will depart LAX at 1:30pm. HA has offered a daily late afternoon flight between LAX and HNL for several years but I can't recall any HA flights departing the west coast this early in the afternoon.
Both new flights will be flown with 767 Aircraft.

In the DC-10 era, HA3 was a mid-day flight LAX-HNL. I flew it in December 1998, March 1999, and March 2000 and it left LAX at noon, and in December 2000 when it left at 12:30pm.
I believe at the time it routed LAS-LAX-HNL (I know that the red eye HA4 went HNL-LAX-LAS); when you consider the flight originating at LAS in the morning, an noon-ish departure from LAX mankes sense.
You are correct! I remembered that HA had a daily LAS-LAX-HNL flight but I couldn't recall what time it left LAX. I was thinking that it left LAX before noon. Any way, it's been several years since HA has had an afternoon flight to Hawaii from LAX and I'm happy about it! It will give us non-rev's more options!

The timing for HA3 was good for me when I was traveling SAN-ITO a few times a year. Late enough out of LAX to easily connect from SAN, but early enough arrival in HNL to make the inter island connection too.

More than anything I hope this forces legacies to at least upgrade equipment into OGG. As someone who travels this leg a couple times a year (own a vacation home in Lahaina) I get so tired of DL's dirty nasty grungy 752's with yellow interiors and broken VHS overheads
With this schedule and codeshare I'll never fly DL again if they don't!

Good luck on the codeshare as it appears intra-Hawaii only (no codeshare out of SJC/OAK on HA to OGG). Maybe a change by next summer, who knows. Just had a good flight on HA/OGG-SJC....sure beats those 757's on the big 3.
