This was the case many years ago. However they changed it to a morning departure.

Now it's an overnight flight again? Why is that?

Yes, it departs in the evening in FRA and departs in the evening in HKG again.

Why? Simple: Passenger wanted it that way. From what I heard is that most people want to fly at night and the arrival and departure times weren't very favourable. So they changed it to 2 red eye flights: LH796 and LH797.

Thanks for clarification!
Good choice even though I like daylight flights from asia. On the way to HKG I really struggled 2 years ago to get a decent sleep. The 5pm departure out of Frankfurt was odd.

Wilco, do you know why they changed the flight number from LH 738 to LH796? Is that because of the new (late) departure time @FRA?

There is a better way to fly

I am not sure if that is the reason, but I guess it has something to do with the slots in either Hong Kong or in China via the L888 airway. But I don't have any information on that, it is only speculation from my side as well.

Another reason for the rescheduling may very well be that, in case the flight is delayed, all evening connections are gone and transit passengers have to be put up in hotels and compensated. Those without nSchengen Visa have to stay inside the transit area.

This shows how far reaching the stupid and inflexible night curfew is and how much it will hurt FRA in the years to come.

But now you have the same problem if the flight to HKG is delayed and cannot depart before 23:00 LT, then everybody has do be put into hotels as well and this makes another late evening departure, so even more crowded between 22:00 and 23:00 in FRA with so many flight departing at that time.

That's why there are no more slots available past 9 pm, ridiculous, new runway but slot problems because of a stupid regulation the industry cannot work with.

LH has been managing pretty well getting the long distance flights airborne in the recent months, pulling departure times even more forward. I guess the overnight HKG-FRA schedule is the lesser evil now.

Cool.

Will HKG-FRA go B 747-8 or even A 380 some day?

Have to agree with this. Same questions over and over again. Many of them answerable via a simple google search or search on the airline's own website.
