First- When will we see DL's MD-11s start to get the new color scheme? No need to post anything about "They are retiring them tomorrow so they wont get the new colors" since we KNOW that the MD-11s will be around for 6-9 more years. I am looking for a DL employee in the know who has seen or has heard when the first MD-11 will go to the paint shop (and get its C check).

Also- another question/ comment about DL's long haul fleet.
The 777-200s currently in the fleet seem to be all we will see, I think there is one more to be delivered but no more on the books. The 777s and MD-11s have very similar range capabilities with the 777s having a slight edge in range yet slight disadvantage in capacity (especially cargo). The new 767-400s cant match the range or either 777 or MD-11 OR the 767-300ER, so they wont be able to do the super long legs that MD-11s and 777-200ERs currently do. With only 8 777s (I think, maybe its 7) and 15 MD-11s, how can DL compete with the much larger long haul fleets of their domestic competetors? The 767-400 is not a true long haul airliner unless its gets a boost in range.

One solution- tell me what you think: With a fully developed MX program for the MD-11 (doing their own MX plus other carriers MD-11 MX) might Delta look at some additional MD-11s coming into the 2nd hand market like the former City Bird/ Sabena ships that as far as I know arent yet earmarked for FED-EX or UPS? There will undoubtedly be more MD-11s available in the coming years and with the crew, maintenance and track record that DL has with their MD-11s, why not add a few to the fleet?

Though not a Delta employee, I will make a few points.

The first MD-11 is supposed to be painted into the new colors this fall. This I read in a previous topic. I don't have any info on precise timing.

The MD-11s are slated for retirement after 2004. Delta has stated that it plans to retire its MD-90s and MD-11s after it finishes off the 727s. I doubt that Delta will take on more MD-11s--Delta has had problems with them on their routes to Japan!

One 777 will be delivered next year, with a few (three?) more coming within two or three years. An additional order for 777s is to be expected from Delta, though it may be deferred until the economic climate is rosier. Keep in mind that Delta has various options and rolling options for 777s so the lag time between order and delivery may be lower than for other airlines.

You talk of Delta being at a disadvantage in terms of wide-body aircraft but neglect completely Delta's enormous fleet of 767-300s, the true backbone of their long haul fleet.

DL's website states that the OWNED MD-11s will be phased out from 2007-2010 (6-9 years) and I assume that the leased aircraft will go when their leases expire. They own 8 and lease 7. The MD-90s also look to be staying around for another 6 years according to DL website information.

A friend of mine in the paint shop. 4 MD-11's to be painted in November. Right now they are hammering out the 737 fleet, especially the 737-200's for express. Have you seen them? They're absolutely dreeeeeeaaaamy!!!!!

The first B-777 goes in for overhaul in October. It will be painted and converted to the 3-3-3 layout in coach, and the crew berthings will be installed in the ceiling. Same system as BA, but I hope that they address the ventilation problems that BA seems to have.

DL has been burned by buying used planes, and I think that they have learned that the best way to get planes is to buy them factory new. The 737-300's from Germania has cost them big. The 767's from Gulf Air and Asiana are doing quite well thank you.

All of the widebodies will be painted either in SEA, or some place in Alabama that they have contracted with. DL aspires to be rid of the old livery by June of '02.

Thanks for the insight and infor Exusair! I didnt know that DL had second hand 767s from Asiana and Gulf Air although I had heard about the Germania 737s.

I still think that as long as planes are maintained properly it doesnt much matter whether they are new or 10 years old. It would seem that a type that fits the fleet, maintenance program, route structure and crew training would be alot cheaper to introduce (additional MD-11s) than a new type. I guess if they really have more 777s in the pipeline (which the Boeing website doesnt reflect) they will be okay and I didnt really mean to leave out the 767-300ER which they have quite a number of. I just cant see that airplane (767-300ER)with a 3 class capacity of just 206-212 quite meet the capacity needs of some high density international routes. But I could be wrong, I know they use lots of them to Europe.

Delta has 6 more 777's coming in the next few years. I agree that they will not buy any more used aircraft unless they absolutely have to. The 767's from Gulf Air were brought into the fleet easily enough, but one from Asiana (ship 1521) was a total disaster to overhaul. A friend of mine is a structural engineer with Tech Ops.

I think that we won't see never the MD-11 with the new color scheme. The MD-11 will be in the fleet until six or nine years more. Delta will replace the MD-11 with 777-200ER. In according with the Delta Annual report 2000 the next year Boeing will delivery a new Boeing 777-200ER.

Just so you know, due to EPA regs, aircraft are NOT painted during C or D checks. Painting and Inspections are done seperately. This practice hasn't happened at Delta for over eight years.

I agree that DL will not persue any used MD11. The planes may be well maintained but the issue is commonality. I hear the Germania planes have completly different avionics. That complicates the spares issues and training demands.

The plan I've seen shows the MD11's being painted in ATL, while the 767 will be done in PAE. Another paint line will be in PHX not Alabama.

Also, why not color all the way to the base of the tail?
I like the color, it shouldn't just stop at the engine.
Oh well I will voice my displeasure when they paint them that way.
