Hello out there.
Happy holidays! I just gotta share this.
GL ended ordinary service of the Sikorsky S-61 as of today, after impressive 47 years operating daily passenger routes all over Greenland. It's in danish only, but I'll translate the article:

http://sermitsiaq.ag/node/144367

End of an era.

Saturday December 29th is the last day of Air Greenlands S-61 helicopter in scheduled service.

The former Grønlandsfly was the first airline in the world which started passenger service with helicopters over longer vast distances. The airline bought three new Sikorsky S-61 helicopters in the spring of 1965.

And the last flight is actually flown by the airframe OY-HAG, which was built and delivered in 1965. She has become "an old lady" at 47 years.

Today's routes are flights from Narsarsuaq (BGBW) to Narsaq and Nanortalik via Qaqortoq. At the end of the afternoon it's a flight from Narsarsuaq via Narsaq to Qaqortoq. On board is cpt. Tomas Glatzl, cabin attendant Najaaraq Sikemsen og F/O Carsten Kolby.

The type will remain in service for SAR and charter until two Eurocopter EC-225 join the fleet in 2014 as replacements.

Best regards.

///Abel

What's replacing the S-61s on the routes they've been operating?

I believe a few Bell 212's will operate the routes as they do already.

I suspect we might see the Eurocopter EC-225 (yet to be delivered) to fly some scheduled routes eventually.

I miss the sound of rolls royce darts and speys

That's right. Forgot to metion that. One EC-225 will fly scheduled routes and one will operate charters, offshores and SAR.
