Once upon a time, EUG had United and (briefly) AirCal service with B732, but in this day and age, does EUG have the population to support the WN high-frequency, point-to-point model? You'd think AS would have taken the hub service mainline from QX if there was a big enough market.

Pre-WN merger Morris Air served EUG. When WN acquired Morris, EUG was dropped along with ANC, COS, DEN, FAT, IFP, and PSP. Since then, only DEN has been brought back out of the seven cities dropped (Morris served 21 cities in total).
I don't think that EUG would work today for WN, as it's AS/QX territory, and AS will go out of their way to defend that part of the country (remember the WN at BFI fiasco).

Not really accurate at all. DEN was WN city from 83-86 before leaving. So it wasn't so much bringing DEN back from the Morris cities, but return to a former WN city.
As far as the topic at hand. EUG could find itself in the WN system down the road. There isn't any option between PDX and SMF, so it could provide a nice filler with a few flights a day.

The EUG metro will probably hit 400K in the next decade, so it isn't out of the realm of possibility. However, EUG is a three-hour drive from PDX so it already splits a lot of its catchment with PDX. But who know? WN continues to evolve so it could happen.

UA has had on again off again mainlines service from SFO-EUG. I flew it a few times in maybe 2001-2003? 737-500s if I recall correctly.
Eugene to Portland is hardly a 3 hour drive, more like 2 and 1:45 if you hustle.
As much as I hope they get regular mainline again someday (not counting Allegiant or similar), I think the Q400 service of Horizon is as good as it's going to get for a while.

If WN were to start a token presence at EUG in the future, I would think a couple daily flights to OAK would make the most sense. This would provide great connectivity to southern California, LAS, PHX, and a few others as well as serving Bay area O&D. Other than OAK the only thing that would make much sense out of EUG would be LAS or DEN, but both those are longer stage lengths. LAS and DEN do offer a lot more connectivity than OAK, particularly to non-west coast destinations. Thoughts on this?

Back in the day, UA also did mainline to DEN. Flew on more than a few 727s on that route over the years. Especially with the growth of Allegiant, EUG is becoming more of a leisure-driven airport. Usually, it's cheaper to fly out of PDX even considering parking costs (although not always -- my next trip to PTY will be out of EUG, since it was way cheaper than PDX with a better schedule).

Allegiant has enjoyed the loads on the EUG to PHX/AZA flights. WN with 1 daily to the following PHX, DEN, LAX, LAS, and maybe something like MDW to allow connects ..... Horizon flights are very full leaving EUG. Happy New Years

Yeah MDW seems to much of a stretch, if you are just doing it for connections. DEN is a much closer and better option. G4 has proven that there is a market there, so PHX/LAS could fit in nicely. Could pretty easily make it work with 4-5 flights a day once other opportunities are tackled and WN looks for other cities to fill the gaps.

I'd agree with you Iowaman, EUG-OAK 2x daily makes the most sense along with perhaps 1 daily to LAS.

Should WN serve EUG, it won't be for at least a few years, as WN is fleet neutral and what growth they are doing is focused on connecting the FL dots to WN and into the Caribbean/Mexico. If anything, the trend for WN to reduce its capacity in the Pac NW is likely to continue.
