The article (in Arabic) states that SV will start service to YYZ and LAX in 2013 and 2014, respectively, using the newly recieved 77W. They will also increase total frequency to IAD and JFK to 14 weekly starting April of 2013.

Interesting development

Also according to the article, CDG will be upgauged to B772 11x week, and 14x week (seasonal?) service to GVA will be launched in summer 2013.

Good to see SV developing their route network, but the priority needs to be putting out the fires at "Saudia Aerospace Engineering Industries" . They can't risk having the EASA licence revoked.

I think SV really should expand; it seems as though EK and QR are now eons ahead of them, and it is now clear there is plentiful opportunity for Saudia in the US market. Is it true that the transfer facilities in JED have either been recently updated or will be soon?

I think this is great. SV is not a bad airline at all actually. The other gulf carriers are doing spectacular things, while SV kind of sits around. But I think the Saudi market is very different also, due to entry being so difficult.

RUH airport needs help actually. When I flew to the USA last week, no gates were displayed on the monitors anywhere. The gate had been changed, there were no announcements. People were walking around lost. The terminal has an interesting design. But its also lacking.

The south terminal (SV , XY and AF) did get a small renovation/expansion to tide it over, improving amongst things within-terminal transfers but it's still not ideal. The real change will come when the new terminal complex is finished which is still a while away.

Here's a video detailing the project along with progress shots from late November:

For some reason the link is getting garbled in my previous post. Here it is: http://www.jed-airport.com/en/video/ProgressEn.flv

If the mods can fix the original post that would be great.

The Canada-Saudi Arabia bilateral would require changes to permit that. It currently only gives SV rights to YUL.

Have SV been granted daily rights...?

If this be the case EK & EY ain't going to be too impressed!

Always been curious as to why SV never stated an IAH service years before EK or QR . I suppose it is all moot, with QR, EK and soon TK, I suspect the Houston market is tapped with regards to the Middle East / Persian Gulf sector.

I think this will be the 3rd of 4th time SV has said they will serve LAX. They have been maintaining an office in LA since the 1980s.

While we frequently do see SV aircraft here for royal flight activity, I do wonder what market SV is wishing to pursue.

Demand to the kindgom is rather meager from these parts and I'm not sure SV is cut out to play well in the very competitive transit game to places like India considering the spartan transit experience for passengers and often less then attractive scheduling SV tends to utilize.

Well IAH has been a freighter station for SV for a while now.

It has indeed been expanded.

For release - December 28, 2012

OTTAWA — The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, and the Honourable Ed
Fast, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, today announced that the existing
bilateral air transport agreement between Canada and Saudi Arabia has been expanded.
The amendments, which
were recently negotiated during the ICAO Air Services Negotiation Conference in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, will give additional flexibility for airlines of both countries to determine routings and pricing, and allow them to respond to market developments more rapidly.
