After looking over the details of the recent TU-204 accident, I had a look back at the other major incidents of 2012 and found that actually 2012 seems to have been one of the best years for commercial aviation safety. I don't believe there has been a single hull loss of a modern Airbus or Boeing aircraft. Granted there was the Bhoja air 737-200 crash, and also the high profile Sukhoi Superjet accident, but it definately looks good for the reliabilty of modern airliners.

Lets hope this trend continues into 2013 and beyond

Good Luck.

I was thinking about aviation safety, specifically within the United States the other day and correct me if I'm wrong but it occurred to me that over the past 10 years there have been a total of 99 deaths on commercial flights within the US (OH 5191 and 9L 3407) with zero fatalities on mainline aircraft since November 12th, 2001 (AA 587).
Unless I'm missing an accident that's a truly amazing record. Under 10 deaths per year on average and zero on mainline flights.
Using Bureau of Transport Statistics figures of approximately 600m enplaned pax per year that's a total of 99 fatalities out of 6,000,000,000 people. Incredible numbers to think about.

Don't forget about Air Midwest 5481 and Pinnacle 3701 (ferry). Still a very good record.

Good catch. So the 99 fatalities in 10 years will be correct as long as we don't have another accident in the next 4 days (Air Midwest was Jan 8, '03). I remembered the Pinnacle one but didn't count it as commercial since it was a ferry and I doubt the pilots would have been able to attempt FL410 with pax on board.

Wired.com now reports that 2012 was actually the safest year in aviation since 1945. Only 11 fatal crashes involving commercial passenger aircraft worldwide (plus 12 fatal crashes of cargo, skydiving and demonstration planes).

Given that air travel increased by 5% in 2012, definitely a good trend.

Am I cured? Slept 5 hours on last long-haul flight...

Congratulations to the manufacturers. The modern aircraft have an amazing ability to keep flying reliably and safely, despite our best efforts as humans to screw things up from time to time.
