I am considering a trip to YYZ from MAN and KLM are coming up as the cheapest via AMS.
I have no experience with this airline and would like any advice on legroom, inflight entertainment, meals, etc.
The aircraft from AMS to YYZ is a 747-300, if anyone has flown any of KLM's 743's please could you let me know what they are like.
Any replies would be greatly appreciated.

AIRLINERS.NET CREW CHAT OPERATOR
On March 25th 2001, I've been on YYZ-AMS on a 743. The takeoff is a little loud. You can experience almost everything from a 744, but with a little more turbulence. The food is OK. But when I pressed the attendant request button, There was no answer. Again I pressed it, No answer again. 'Guess they were sleeping. I saw Caroline in The City and for a movie The Family Man. The inflight magazines should be called the Holland Herald.
The biggest mistake made by most human beings: Listening to only half, understanding just a quarter and telling double.

I cannot speak for myself on this one but I have not heard good things about KLM when it comes to staff. From what I have heard, the crew are rather rude and not very polite but the aircraft are nice and comfy.
I guess its a matter of being lucky enough to get a good crew as with most airlines.

I have flown KLM quite a few times to Beijing (743, 744) and Kuala Lumpur (744). Their service is ok, but nothing special. In the end you get what you pay for I guess. The meals are the normal chicken or beef stuff, inflight entertainment consists of a few movies (shown on some monitors, no PTVs in economy) and some audio channels, seat pitch is a bit small, but still ok. One great thing about KLM is that they put economy passengers into business seats if there are such seats available. That happened to me 4 times, once even without asking. So, just be very early whn checking in, then you might have a good chance to sit in a business seat with great legroom and PTV. However, you get the normal economy service, so it´s no real upgrade. But for me it´s the seat that counts.
So, I think KLM offers a good product, not as good as some asian carriers, but it´s good average.

Thanx for the advice guys I appreciate your replies.
I am looking at other airlines too, but thought I'd check out why KLM are so cheap, now I know why.
If anyone else has any more comments, they too would be appreciated.

I have flown on KLM 12 times,as well as BA, LH, AF, SR, AL, and other european airlines. I have always had very good experiences in every class of service. The 743 is a nice not very old plane. There honestly is no more turbulence on it that a 744, it has nothing to do with what kind of plane it is. As far as the staff go, the Dutch people are as friendly as they come. Always smiling and happy to give you a extra bottle of wine or an extra cheese crossaint for part of your breakfast.
Seats are very comfortable but the recline is a tad sharp as with every airline. But World Business class is sumpreme.
YOu will always find current movies, always at least two, and some sort of entertaining TV show while you eat. The hospitality is much better than BA, LH, or AF. Amertdam Schipol is honestly one of the best airports in the world, according to me and Travel and Leisure. Very easy to get around, everyone speaks english. YOu won't be disapointed by your choice.

To fly with KLM from MAN to YYZ via AMS, the cheapest available flight I have found is £215.
To fly direct with Air Canada the price goes up to £406.
I've tried Canada 3000 and can't find any available flights for the dates I want.
BMI don't fly to Toronto.
And as for Air Transat, I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.

I flew AMS-YYZ and the service was fine, good food (doesn't have "airline food" taste). Seats were ok, although Air Canada is better. The FAs were all really nice and attentive. IE is good for economy, the movies they play are very current and they usually choose new ones. I saw Shrek. Anyway, I wasn't bored at all during the flight. It was one of my best experiences. Amsterdam is so far the best and easiest airport to transfer through. It has great stores as well. I enjoyed it a lot more that Heathrow or Frankfurt. Frankfurt was my most unpleasent airport I have experinced so far. Another nice airport is Vienna.

If you want loads of take-offs and landings and more comfort than on KLM choose Swissair/American Airlines for your trip. Fly MAN-ZRH-ORD-YYZ or MAN-ZRH-BOS-YYZ and expirience great flights with splendid service. You might pay a little more, but hey, it'll be worth it.

As you can see from my username I like them!
The aircrafts are clean, flightattendants are friendly, food is quite good (I prefer the fruit meal but their regular food is nice as well), almost everytime on time, legroom is normal (for inches see homepage), inflight entertainment is very good: great variety of music channels, main movie, video about destination, comedy program, intersting inflight magazine.

And ask for more meals. I did, just between the rules: Dont you have some meals left?
And after a while, the fa came with some extra meals
And i do like them, well, at my work (car sleeping express) they serve the same ones as on the planes, so i have learnt to eat it.

I heared they are better than BA, LH and AF.
But I never experience those by myself.
But I can recommend flying them. And yes
Schiphol is a very nice airport !
