Just wandering if anyone can help with this. Looking at tomorrow, MEA has the following flights out of Najaf, a destination they do not (until now) offer scheduled service to.
Seven flights, some just minutes after the other and all on A321s. Does anyone know what this is for?

ME 1327 Beirut 12:00 PM A321-200
ME 1333 Beirut 12:10 PM A321-200
ME 1329 Beirut 17:25 PM A321-200
ME 1335 Beirut 17:35 PM A321-200
ME 1339 Beirut 21:10 PM A321-200
ME 1343 Beirut 21:25 PM A321-200
ME 1331 Beirut 22:50 PM A321-200

These flights are to transport Lebanese visitors to the Holy city of Najaf. Iraqi Airways also operates B767 and A321 flights on the Najaf - Beirut route during this week.

Lebanon has a large Shiite minority, for whom Najaf is a holy city. Iran, the biggest Shiite country, is running 747s there including their two SPs.

People used to travel overland by charter bus, but due to the events in Syria that's no longer an option. Also there has been recent kidnappings of pilgrims tour buses in Syria, so the government disallowed all overland travel, and hence the frequencies of flights to Najaf.

Speaking of MEA, I am still trying to understand what they got out of the skyteam membership.

Only code share is with AF and Tarom. I would have thought they would collaborate more with AZ, maybe run flights to AMS or maybe CZ would bring flights back to BEY.

CZ is the two letter country code for the Czech Republic, thus the confusion.
