Aaron Nee of Kaiser High School is the winner of the AS "Paint the Plane" contest being held in Hawaii. I think Aaron's design was the popular favorite and I can't wait to see in on one of AS's aircraft!!

I must admit I saw that on the AS Facebook page and thought it would be cool if it was the winner. I really like the design: It's vibrant and eye-catching, without being over-the-top.

Should look amazing on the aircraft.

EDIT: Only thing I don't like is the blue engines, I think they should stick with white (which they probably will).

I'm tired of the A vs. B sniping. Neither make planes that shed wings randomly!

Wow! That is at least as intricate and impressive as Salmon-Thirty-Salmon. You have to hand it to AS for being so innovative.

What's next for AS in Hawaii? Seems like there aren't many dots left to connect other than stuff I'd think is less likely like BLI-LIH or SMF-KOA.

Wow!! Can't wait to see a picture of the plane. Absolutely wonderful to see AS paying tribute to Hawaii, much like WN has for years with several key states in their network. 10 years ago, Alaska Airlines didn't serve Hawaii. Now, it is such an integral part of their network that they are specially painting a plane in its honor!

Quoting BoeingGuy (Reply 3):

What's next for AS in Hawaii.. SAN-KOA springs to mind. I'm guessing they don't have any intention of offering an ONT-Hawaii (most likely ONT-HNL service) as HA and then TZ did in the past. Of course, that was before the Inland Empire's economy tanked with the housing market.. AS has grown increasingly bold with new routes lately, maybe they'll try some SFO-Hawaii or even LAX-Hawaii. Otherwise, all they can do is some very marginal stuff like ANC-LIH, SMF-KOA, etc.

I think you're right in maybe seeing SAN-KOA or ANC-LIH....those are about the only missing pieces from cities they're already serving Hawaii from.

Sure wish they'd stuck it out in LGB because that would have been a great station to serve the LA Basin to Hawaii from. Unfortunately that ship has sailed. BUR and SNA have too short of runways, ONT is a ghost town and LAX has plenty of service. So LA will forever remain the hole in the network for Hawaii on AS. I think you'll see some love for LAX in the future to some sunny, tropical destinations though...Hawaii isn't the only paradise!

This was a great promotion and I love the winning entry. It will be great to see it actually come to life. (Is there an estimate on when the livery will be unveiled, HiFlyer'?)

As fpr the sub-topic in this thread, I'm rather partial to the already-mentioned SAN-KOA route to be added soon.

SMF, with only the one flight to Maui, is one of the least-served mainland cities to HI -- actually it IS the city with the fewest routes to the Islands I believe. It will be interesting to see if AS adds more routes there.

I haven't heard a date but I'm sure they'll try and get it done before Aaron finishes the school year. They'll fly the plane over for a big unveiling...it'd be a shame if Aaron is away on summer vacation!

You can't get much lower that one flight, unless you are ZLO that gets like one weekly AS flight in the Summer. Now that BLI has OGG, you are correct.

How does SMF-OGG do? AS has kept it so far, unlike SMF-GDL that was gone in a heartbeat. So I assume that at least that one route does well enough for AS to keep it.

I can't believe that a huge population base as ONT can't support one daily Hawaii flight, at least. UA tried it for a short time with a DC-8 back in the day too.

So far others have said that SEA-ITO is nowhere on AS's list. Is that still correct?

Although I had voted for the 2nd prize design, congratulations to the grand prize winner. Not a fan of the rather empty tail, but I'm sure this very colorful livery will still turn heads once it comes to life.

No specific dates have been released yet, but I recall AS mentioning that it was going to be some time during the spring this year.

Wow! Impressive, all of them. My personal favorite is Marina Garcia's, which has on one side, the humuhumunukunukuapua'a fish occupying the nose of the plane.

Don't go to Hawaii, the beautiful colors will hurt your eyes.

One of the nicest liveries I've seen - well done!

It's a great livery, but the only thing that bothers me is the "spirit of the islands" part. I know the subject in the artwork is what embodies the spirit, but having it next to Alaska Airlines, implies that Alaska Airlines is the one that embodies the spirit. As much as they try and they do a nice job, it's impossible for a mainland company to embody such spirit. It's way more than wearing aloha print shirts, flower lei, being nice and serving mai tais.

Well, except for SMF. (And a couple of Outer Islands from BLI which may or may not be viable.)

Quoting BoeingGuy (Reply 9):

Don't forget that during the summer of 2012, AS added an extra Maui flight that was split between SAN and SMF, giving both cities about 1 1/2 flights per day (10-11 weekly r/ts) from June to early November. The plane (I assume) was then moved up to the northwest to increase the winter service to the Islands out of SEA and PDX. That tells me that the SMF-OGG market is pretty healthy for AS; of course there is no competition on that route from HA either.

Since HA does fly daily to HNL from SMF, my guess is that AS does not see the market large enough for them to jump in as well; same goes for LIH and KOA but who knows. The other part of the equation is the cost of op'ing at SMF which might be a major consideration for AS as it appears to be for other cx serving the state's capital.

I'd argue that AS very closely embodies it since our own "Alaska Spirit" is very closely aligned with the unique culture and spirit found in the people of Hawaii.

Beautiful! I love the livery and it is very eye catching. It should be a nice change up to see something other than white fly in the sky. I would think, though, that it must use a lot of paint and that it must be very heavy. Heavier means more fuel. I assume it will still be able to make the trip or AS will edit it where necessary. Congratulations to the student who won.

Contrarary to what some on A-net would have you believe, A 737-800 making it/not making it to Hawaii is not that close.

Maybe Alaska better start washing their planes before every crossing to.
Sheez!
