Question About TWA In MIA Before Deregulation?

I know TWA had quite a number of flights when they started service to MIA in around 1959 including a MIA-STL-LAX.Their service to Florida consisted of MIA and TPA from STL via BNA and ATL. Then in the 1970s I remember 2 MIA-TPA-STL-MCI and 1 MIA-STL-MCI operated with 727s and maybe a 707-131B.However I did spot a TWA DC-9 in TPA in 1975. My question is did TWA ever operate a Convair 880 between STL-MIA,I noticed a few photos of a TWA L-1011 in MIA during the mid 1970s in the Photos here. Did TWA have a L-1011 on their MIA-STL run or was it probably a charter? I have seen this mentioned before when a airline has a few flights into a city another airline handles their operations there. Did TWA have their own staff at MIA and TPA before deregulation or was it handled by another airline?

I believe TWA did have L1011 service from MIA-STL back in the 70's. Didn't TWA also have flights from JFK to MIA back then? I remember in July of 1995 TWA had at least one flight from MIA to JFK using a 727. This was on concourse G. Ironically that same day a few gates over I and my now ex-wife were awaiting our Tower 747-100 formerly a Continental 747 flight to JFK.

Along with the (two a/c) Haas-Turner L1011 seasonal swap between EAL and Air Canada, for two or so years EAL operated a TWA L1011 during the winter season and IIRC* TWA operated an EAL L1011 during the summer.

*Remember about 40 years has elapsed since the above went down... thus my fuzzy memory...

In both cases, winter traffic was north-south and summer traffic was east-west and the equipment swaps helped match capacity seasonally.

TWA only had one route to MIA before deregulation, STL-BNA-ATL-TPA-MIA with nonstop rights between all the points. In the 1973, I flew on a TW DC-9 to TPA from STL via ATL. In the 1960's, before the award of the LAX-MIA nonstop to NE, they were the only airline with through service via STL in competition with National's nonstop and other direct flights. Delta did not have same plane service, and I do not think they could operate through flights but could only carry connecting passengers with a plane change in ATL. TWA operated one nonstop 707 between STL and MIA daily with an additional flight on certain days of the week. My first jet flight was on a 707-331 from STL to MIA in March of 1961. L-1049G and L-1649's were used before 707's, and the 727's were added in 1964 or 1965 but I don't think TW ever scheduled Convair 880''s into MIA.

Yes they did, at least in the mid-90s. There was a STL-MIA-SJU roundtrip with the L1011s. I'm not sure of exact start dates, or whether they still flew it in 2001 after the L10s were gone - maybe a 757 or 767 by then?

TWA also ran the B747 down to MIA at certain times well into the 90's. Certainly from JFK...not sure about STL though.

MIS-SJU was also operated with a B727 in the late 80's. It ceased for a while but when the SJU "focus city" started up it was reopened, I think on an MD80

They did try a direct MIA-STL-LAX but other airlines protested, saying TWA's award wasn't supposed to allow that, and it ended for a while at least.

And from the A-Net photo archives and information, TWA's final 707 flight ever was out of MIA in 1983 to STL. Though a bit off topic I felt this deserved an honorable mention.

I was gong by the contributing photographer's captain and though both JFK and STL were TWA hubs I assumed STL with more available real estate would be the terminus for 707's to bid their fare ado to TWA before being dispatched to old airliner pasture (the desert or the aviation rendering plant where they are dismantled for parts and re-cycling.)

Again sorry for going off topic but I was surprised to see that TWA's 707's at least this one retained much of it's original cabin. The swinging 60's pod PSU's.
For another thread down the line but I'll ask anyway. Which of the major airlines did not retrofit and update their 707 and 727 cabins with the "wide bodied cabin scheme." The recessed psu's.

I remember Eastern and Delta 727's had the newer "wide body cabin look."

Im not sure when TWA started service to MIA.In the summer of 1960 they had at least one STL,BNA,ATL,TPA, and MIA roundtrip operated with a L1649A.I saw the flight come through Atlanta and was the first TWA aircraft that I had seen and the only L1649A that I have seen fly.

To be even more nit picky, this was TWA's final SCHEDULED 707 flight. The next day, TWA used the same 707 as an equipment substitution on a JFK-ORD-MCI flight, to ferry it back to TWA's MCI base.

TWA historian / employee Jon Proctor was on the last flights, and on the ORD-MCI leg, he turned out the regular cabin lights, and turned on the skylights in the cabin roof; according to published accounts of the flight, Proctor's gesture, and his speech about the 707 that followed it, moved some long time TWA employees to tears.

I worked briefly in MIA in the mid-70's and one of the guys in the office commuted to STL every other weekeknd. I recall both 707's and 727's from STL. some nonstop and some with a quick stop in TPA. I do not recall him saying they stopped at BNA ( this was 76/77). Maybe it was a matter of time of day..I hope this helps a tad.

BNA was only a stop in Constellation days. After Jets were introduced, the BNA flights either continued on to Atlanta only or turned around and went back to STL. But the route granted was as I listed, with turn around privileges to STL from every point.

I non-revved the STL-TPA route several times in the early 70's, and I believe each time it continued on to MIA. I believe the flight number was 492, left STL around 6pm and arrived in TPA sometime after 9pm local time.

I believe there were several daily N/S flights between STL and MIA during this time with two others going via TPA, and as several others here have mentioned they were with a mix of 707 and 727.

IIRC, all ATL flights from STL were terminators on the DC-9, nothing onward to MIA from ATL.
