Future Of DL Etops Domestic 763s (76P)

As we all know, DL has stated that the domestic 763s will be phased out and replaced by 739ERs, with the 753s taking over many of its routes. However, I have been hearing some rumors that DL will be keeping the domestic ETOPS 763s (76P). From what I heard, DL wants to phase out the GE CF6-80A engine from the fleet.

The domestic ETOPS 763s actually have the same higher-rated PW4060 engines that half of the 763ER fleet has; they are the only non-ER 763s in the world to have them. Also, considering that DL's youngest 76P was built in 1999, it wouldn't surprise me if DL keeps them in service longer than the rest of the fleet.

I agree entirely with your assessment. It is true that the small number of CF6-80As are getting more expensive to maintain due to age / cycles, not to mention the aircraft they are attached to are getting up there in age. Likewise the 4 76P aircraft (ships 1401-1404) are considerably younger than the other domestic -300s (two delivered in 1993, one delivered in 1998 and one delivered in 1999) and more importantly, share the PW engine with almost half the ER fleet. I could easily see these four aircraft flying to 2020 or beyond but that is pure speculation on my part.

Yes, however, they were not always ETOPS certified from the beginning. DL converted them to ETOPS to make up for the shift of the 764s to international routes.

I agree that the 76Ps are in Delta's fleet for the long-term. My hope is that they get the same interiors as the 767-300ER fleet once the 767-300ER mods are done. If they do, the -300ERs will have a '76Z' high-density configuration, and I could see the 76Ps get that as well.

Actually, for the summer 2013 schedules, SLC-HNL is being reverted back to a 76P, and I wouldn't be surprised if the LAX-HNL flight goes back to a 76P as well.

LAX-HNL is a contunation of NGO-HNL on a 76ER right now.
Honestly, I am surprised that HNL-ATL doesn't go 2X on the 76ER ISO of the A330, and return LAX-HNL to 76P.

There are 4 76Ps in the fleet that have traditionally only done ATL-SLC-HNL and ATL-LAX-HNL.

I agree witht the poster above that a 76Z configuration would make sense for these 4 birds once the 76Qs go away...eliminate a subfleet. They would fit perfectly for the current 76P routes as well as JFK-Transcons/SNN/CPH/MAN and ATL-LIM/BSB

The DL website says the 76Ps have a range of 3515 sm and JFK-SNN is 3081. Would these have the legs to do westbound in the winter when the 75Es (4705 sm range) make the occasional tech stop in the winter. They definitely couldn't do JFK-CPH as it is 3858 sm.

I would say this is unlikely. Thats not a product to put on a route that is going to most be upgrades to F. As I said in the other thread, I don't think LAX/SLC-HNL will be staying on the 76Z from long.

I disagree. I think the product is to premium to west coast-HNL flying.

No need. Delta can't find enough routes right now to put the 300ERs on. Why just add more airplanes to they fleet?

Yes, the F seats would be much nicer, but the 76Z would be a reduction in F count. And as you state, 767-300ERs are on the HNL routes now.

You hit the nail on the head. By standardizing the interiors on all of the 767s, Delta would not have to keep two sets of 767 parts (i.e. parts for the the old style 767 bins). They would also provide a consistent experience on all of the 767 flights, regardless of where they fly to.

While I think the new style bins would be nice (anything that fits more bags is good in my book) but I would prefer the 76Ps stay the same configuration. I don't mind the domestic first class seats and when I am trying to non-rev to the islands a plane with 35 more seats just gives me that much more of a chance.
