The New Doha International Airport, will recieve its first passengers April 1. It has been renamed to Hamad International Airport, after His Highness the Amir of Qatar.

Please note that only those airlines that do NOT require lounge access will be the first to use it; which means Low Cost Carriers and others. National carrier Qatar Airways will not use it by April; but will wait until all the lounges are fitted.

A bit of a background:

The German-UAE Contractor who was doing the lounges at the new DOH got fired, and replaced with another--which brings in a new series of delays. A replacement Italian Contractor is working on the lounges and will finish gradually from June to September. So, QR will move there perhaps in September.

Clearly the airport below is almost complete (in fact its 99% complete) and looks indeed one of the world's best!

Thank you for the pictures. It looks beautiful.

Somehow though these pictures look familiar.  .

On www.skyscrapercity.com, the worlds largest architecture and construction internet forum there is a thread in the internation section about the construction of this airport. And many other airports in different threads.

The Mosque

Do we know about interior arrangements? A glass dome like that in Qatar is going to cook any worshippers inside unless something is done to provide interior shade.

So QR finally get's a real airport as home base which is in par with the competition!

Looks stunning but I think the corridors in the gate area are a little narrow to let the big stream of passengers passing through during rush hours...

The ICAO-Code of Doha New International is OTHH. The currenct airport has ICAO-Code OTBD and IATA-Code DOH. What will be the IATA-Code for OTHH? Also DOH?

Thanks for the pics. It is quite nice to see such a sober and elegant interior (at least from the pictures), instead of some bling-bling shinny structure with palms all around like other major regional airports  .

Quoting viasa (Reply 9):

I guess so, DOH is very recognizable for DOHa. BKK had the same shift when they opened the new airport.

No comparison.... T5 is horrendous... especially at peak times. It has too much space landside (checkin) and feels cramoed when you are airside (gates).

The New Doha International Airport, will recieve its first passengers April 1.

Couldn't they have picked a better opening date? With all of the troubles this airport has been through, opening on April Fools day is asking for a roasting.

Come on, am I the really the only a.nutter already planning how to have fun with made up stuff on the opening date?

Not so fast. Seems NDIA for QR is targeted for December 2013.

Google Maps shows 2 runways parallel to existing runway.

This would be interesting as OTBD will still be operating, unless they create a taxiway between runway at OTHH and OTDB.

Wikipedia is saying that it will have 2 runways so far with the first being 5500 meters and the second being 4900 meters...

Perhaps earlier in September.

I heard 12 to 13 airlines will shift to NDIA by April; I assume there will be a temporary lounge for those non-QR O&D carriers. That will free up to 20% of the current airport capacity for QR 2013 expansion. QR can also take over Terminal B at this present airport to expand a bit the check-in areas.

I just read this article: http://www.ameinfo.com/qatars-airport-april-1-326754

Qatar's Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA) has announced the first phase of the country's new Hamad International Airport is to be officially opened on April 1, Arabian Aerospace has reported. The first phase of the $15.5bn project involves 12 international passenger airlines becoming the launch carriers of the new facility, including low-cost airlines.

So, which airlines will be the launch customers for this airport?

BTW. how far is this airport from the old DOHA Airport located?
