Cebu Pacific Launches Dubai!

It has been known since last year that Cebu Pacific have intensions of getting eight A330-300s to start up long-haul operations. As of this morning, the airline finally announced the first destination: Dubai.

Flights will be operated on a daily basis using one-class configured A330-300s, seating 436 passengers.

5J7944 MNL1640 – 2140DXB 333 D
5J7945 DXB2310 – 1140+1MNL 333 D

Flights will start on October 7.

A side note is that capacity on the route will be doubled, as Emirates recently added a third daily 77W two weeks ago.

That is one crowded A-330, hope there is not one bilakbayan (sp?) box for each passenger or that 333 won't get off the ground.

Not really. Cebu Pacific are mainly targeting Filipino overseas workers, which is also what the majority of the passengers onboard Emirates flights to Manila are. Sure, there are also business and tourist travelers, but their share is small.
The only difference would be that 5J is targeting more O/D pax to DXB, whereas EK transfer alot more, but either way it's mainly the samy type of passengers.

True point well made. I'm half Filipino myself but six feet tall, so it doesn't really sound attempting. Pricelevel on the other hand does.
Funny thing is Thomas Cook Scandinavia flies from its bases to Thailand using A330-300s configured with 408 seats, and Scandinavians are generally tall. But people here in up here don't seem to care...

Here's the lattest 9 abreast operator of the A330. They are only four seats short of the maximum for the type. It's gonna be quite a henhouse in there.

They're offering a seat sale: P899 base, plus P100 administrative fee, plus taxes until supplies last. Computations online are estimating the total fare at around P11,000 round-trip.

I've seen pretty tall people on 5J's narrow-bodies, so you should be fine if the pitch will be the same on the new A330s.

I know that for an A320, they have four flight attendants. If the A330's capacity is any indication, I'm expecting somewhere between 12 and 16.

One flight attendant per 50 passenger seats is required, which would require 9 flight attendants for their A330.

Maximum seating capacity in a single class layout is 440, so this is pretty much the highest capacity found on the A333.

I'm sure I would, was a bit sarcastic. I've been on flights with 5J before and was quite saticfied.

Exactly. Although the thing is, low yield markets can be profitable, you just need to have the right configuration for the aircraft you send (and ofcourse a few other factors). If airlines squeze as many seats as possible and manages to fill them, that's the primary way to success in a low yield market.

Agreed. I flew MNL-AUH on EY last July and economy was packed with 384 passenges, while business was filled 11/28. How many of these eleven were paying full fare? That's another question...

That being said, I think this new route by 5J will be highly popular and it will be interesting to see which new routes will follow.

Corsair International go for a two class configuration on their A330-300 : C26Y334 = 360 seats.

The EC imposed in 2010 a flight ban on all air carriers registered in the Philippines. To my knowledge this flight ban has not been lifted yet.
Otherwise I do agree : it would be nice indeed to see 5J in Europe with their attractive fares ! The Philippines are certainly a wonderful destination for vacation !

PR, 5J and 2P are very likely candidates for exemption from the blacklist. For one, PR has already asked the EU for an exemption which I presume includes 2P. I'm inclined to believe that 5J will do the same as well.

The UK promised assistance to get Philippine carriers off the blacklist: I wonder how it intends to do that.

CX carries the highest number of Philippine bound pax out of DXB after EK.

Alex, any idea how this would impact CX's market share?

Well, if Cebu Pacific is much cheaper than Cathay or Emirates, it will easily run with full loads on this route. However there is such a large number of Filipinos in the UAE and surrounding middle eastern countries that all three airlines will probably continue flying from Dubai to Manila. (Though I can see Emirates possibly having to reduce their schedule again slightly.) We also have Etihad from Abu Dhabi, Qatar from Doha, Kuwait Airways from Kuwait City, Saudia from Riyadh, Gulf Air from Bahrain etc etc. all to Manila so one extra daily flight from the region is not all that serious.

I have personally flown Qatar from Doha to Cebu and Emirates from Dubai to Manila as well as many times in the far east with Cebu Pacific including international routes such as Hong Kong to Cebu.

Even though the Cebu Pacific A333s will be seated all economy, I wouldn't be surprised if they are well kitted out with advanced IFE for all passengers. The Philippines no longer has the cash shortage it had in the past.

Cebu Pacific also has the advantage of an extensive (and growing) route network out of Manila to most of the cities in the Philippines as well as most major cities in the far east for that matter. However these are run on a low cost model so I'm not sure whether it will be possible to travel from Dubai through to any of these other destinations on one booking. Someone could perhaps enlighten me there. If they do make through bookings possible, they will be onto a good thing here.

Can anyone speculate what other international routes Cebu might annouce using A333?

You are not too far off the reality ...
With their "regular promo" fare of 7000,-Peso ow. (plus taxes) you´ll end up paying around 680,-US$ for a round-trip (incl. taxes and add-ons like baggage/food)
The number of those "super dooper promo" seats at 899,-Peso are really very limited (and shouldn´t be considered "realistic") and most OFW´s won´t be able to get one.
