Why Air Jamaica A340s?

Wouldn't a333s be more economical? I don't think AJ have any routes which require the extra range so why not a330-300s? The twin engines are easier to maintain and they have the same capacity?!

Some airlines do consider astetics.
I can't wait till the day comes US carriers get there act together and buy A340s.

Afaik, LHR is the only destination for Air Jamaica's A340. A little bit too far for the A333. I remember LTU used to fly their 333s from Germany to Cuba, Dominican Republic etc, they had to leave every third seat empty, due to range problems. So the use of an A340 makes sense.

Air Jamaica also continues to look at the possibility of other european destinations, Frankfurt has been mentioned from time to time, so the A343 gives a bit more flexibility.

Also remember the Air Jamaica picked up its A340 aircraft used, likely got a good deal. Only the latest A333 enhanced models could do the Jamica-Europe runs without weight limitations.

The A340-600 would fit in with AJ just fine. The A330 sounds to me like a bad idea. I think I even heard that they want to go to CDG as well as FRA. I didn't hear of anything else.

As Boeing 747-700 said, AJ is getting 2 A340's that AC is returning to lessors. These are relatively early-model A340's that have less range/payload than AC's other A340's. If memory serves, AC picked them up on short-term lease from a cancelled/deferred IB order in 94/95. From the AJ perspective, the lease payments are probably less than newer A340's and they can return their newer A340. Although with all the violence in Jamaica in July, I would imagine tourism is down.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Don't forget cargo and the ability to fly to other European captitals which I believe is still a JM desire.
